Discovering New Foods

We've always struggled with DS and his eating. Associating food with discomfort, feeling full due to issues with adhesions, which lead to an obstruction a couple years ago. So when we find things he loves, we're thrilled.

This past weekend we ate at a greasy spoon diner and were amazed at the amount of blueberry pancakes and french fries he consumed. Sitting up at the counter I got to view the cook using lard to cook with. Hmm, wonder if I need to buy some lard. Cringe.

Yesterday he discovered he liked eating pepperoni -- plain from the bag. He actually ate about half a bag of it. I was making a homemade pizza. Also a surprising request from him.

He's beginning to ask for tastes of things we're eating -- I was eating dark chocolate covered pommegrante seeds yesterday before he hijacked the container. Asked that we save him some of the beef jerky we were eating. And while shopping for pizza incredients, I heard him tell his dad that he liked aged white cheddar because most cheeses don't taste like anything (have no flavor).

So finally at age 8, we're hoping he's finally going to eat more things, ask for more things.

One bad thing though is at his CF appointment on Friday, the doctor indicated that he preferred DS didn't eat so many peanuts. We had a scare a few weeks ago in which DS overdid it -- complained his stomach felt weird and it was distended.

Yay for food! It's so good seeing him being more open to experimenting with things he'd never touch before. Once they associate eating with pain, it's so hard to get past that... and it's something SO many of our kids have been through.

I know with all my kids they are open to trying more when they are involved in it- they enjoyed veggies they were less then enthusiastic about before after growing them for themselves in the garden- so much good stuff to try in the summer even if you can't grow it! And with getting older they also like to help cook now. If they have a hand in making it, often they will eat more of it.

Sooo exctiting!!! Glad to hear he is starting to find a LOVE for yummy food!! Our little man is starting to discover some yummy things too. We BBQ'ed lobster tails the other night, and johnny ran up and said "YUMMY TIGER". The orange color of the shell. It's very exciting!
