Dishwasher warning

A resp tech at the hospital told me that the cff reccomendation of washing nebs in the dishwasher is an old school way of thinking-like going back 10-15 years. They said it really should be updated, but back then that was the most logical way to do it b/c that was the hottest water level.
Now they have autoclaves and bottle sterilizers, and I think thats the best. I just got a hospital grade bottle sterilizer from Avent. It set me back a bundle but I love it!! It takes 12 minutes to sterilize my nebs and I can fit 2 sidestreams in it at once.

Fyi-As far as dishwashers go, I only know this b/c we are soon to be remodeling our kitchen, but there is an 07 Bosch dishwasher that has mold protection/sanitizing protection build in underneath that messy vent on the bottom that traps all the old food. Also, you can pull out that vent much easier on this new model to clean it. On most dishwashers you can't take out the vent/grill to clean it. I think we're going to go with this model.

LightNlife: I took apart the door because of a leak, but the leak was from the door gasket, which I fixed. The steam infiltration was definitely a result of the vents, which are all working as designed, but it's a dumb design because it provides a direct open path from inside the DW to inside the door.

I get the part about DW water temps being far hotter than hand-washing temps and maybe the mold inside the door is not a problem since it it not in direct contact with the wash water or with the drying dishes.

Still, it just was such a foul looking mess to see - That's why I looked at the new models to see if the door designs were any different; I did not see a Bosch but saw plenty of $1000+ stainless models and all of them had vents and openings along the inside bottom edge of their doors through which steam would surely rise.

I'll certainly keep using a DW for dishes..just not for neb parts.

Christian: thanks for the Bosch tip; I'll definitely check into it.

Our CF center said to only use a dishwasher with a sanitizing function to sterilize nebs. Before we built our new home and got our sanitizing dishwasher, our repiratory tech told us not to use our then dishwasher and that we were better off to boil the nebs.

But before I boiled, the cleaning part would take FOREVER. My doc told me to get a tooth brush, put soap on it, and scrub each neb part. It took forever.

So for those who use an autoclave or baby bottle sterilizer or even boil, how do you clean before sterilizing?

I have the eflow and it seems that everyone has a different bit of advice to clean it. IV solutions in Lubbock told me to wash with hot soapy water, put in alcohol (70%) for 5 minutes, then rinse with sterile water...so the alcohol residue won't mix with the medicines.
Love the quickness of the eflow, but really, maintenance is a bugger.
