Do any of you only do breathing treatments when your child is ill?

I've heard that some people only do breathing treatments for their children when they are ill. Is this a common thing? We've been doing treatments 2 to 3 times a day every day since our daughter was born, now she's 10 years old. I'm just wondering if this maybe made her more dependent on them?? I have to wonder if all the meds we give her are needed...any thoughts or experience?
Thanks,
Melissa

It's the best thing for your child to ALWAYS be compliant with treatments. Prevention is key in managing CF. Without the frequent treatments and airway clearance you run the risk of being susceptible to infections.

I only wish that we had all these treatments available to me as a kid. My parents were smart though, they made sure that I did something to exercise my lungs. Now that I know how beneficial these treatments are and what a difference it makes in how well I can breathe and function, I can't imagine being without all these treatments.

CF can be sneaky. Often times problems progress inside us before the signs are obvious enough to notice & get treatment for. Thats why preventative care is important. It makes it more difficult for the sneakiness to catch us.

There are some people that choose to treat only when ill, but this isnt the norm nor is it the most recommended.

Although it might seem like your child could become unneccesarly dependant, I would be more concerned about any lung damage that might take place from not doing treatments. Lung damage cant be reversed, different meds can be tried.

No no no no. She is not dependent on them.

You have been doing the right thing - preventative care.

Your compliance over the past 10 years has kept her healthier than she would be if she didn't do treatments.

CF is about prevention. Preventative care preserves lung function.

Just doing meds when you're sick will lead to lung deterioration more quickly.

You're doing the right thing. Keep it up!
