DS got his RSV shots his first winter. Also his first winter was the nastiest flu season around and he couldn't get his until AFTER he turned 6 months, which was a few days AFTER Thanksgiving, where a couple people showed up sick -- one had influenza, the other pneumonia. I was worried sick; however, I still took him out, he went to daycare, attended family events. One thing I didn't do was take him to see Santa -- was a bit concerned about the germ factor there.

I've always wiped down the grocery carts with antibacterial wipes and wiped off our hands afterwards. Wash hands when we get home from some place.

I do worry, but he 's an active little boy who wants to be on the go. He loves going to the playground. He's been in swimming lessons. Currently he attends gymnastics and sunday school. Before we leave the gym, I wipe his hands off. Yeah, I worry. We try to maintain a balance -- normal life yet still try to protect him from things.

Hi age. I understand your concerns over your daughter catching a nasty bug. I believe everyone, CF or not, should use common sense during the cold/flu season. Lots of hand washing is key.

I also believe that all kids need to be exposed to a few germs. Of course there are exceptions. Kids who are immune compromised simply cannot handle the slightest exposure. However, being exposed to germs is precisely how our bodies build up immunity. I don't know your daughter's exact situation, so I'm not saying take her out there and get her sick. I am saying though, that at some point she will be exposed to something, and it isn't necessarily bad. In fact, it may be worse on her if she isn't exposed to the little germs along the way that all kids come in contact with.

Kids with CF have so many things going on to make them different from others. Keeping her secluded can make it worse. If your doctor agrees, let her get out there and get dirty. Let her play with other babies her age. Letting her socialize is an important part of keeping her healthy. Let her enjoy life. Let yourself enjoy it also.

Everyday I try to find a balance between the fears of germs that CF has cultivated in me and the desire to allow my dd to be a kid. I've been known to bring her to the gym daycare while I workout, but I've also been known to get there and promptly turn around and go home when I see a kid with a snotty nose in the daycare. I do the best I can to balance, and its not easy. I don't want to risk her health, but what good comes from being healthy if you have to live in a hermedically sealed prison to stay that way?? I invest in lots of purell and do regular handwashing moments during her playing, and that's all I can do. I make the best decisions I can. YOU can too!! I know its hard, but I don't know about your life, but I can't stop going grocery shopping or to other public places just to sit home with my kids.
