Hey Guys,
I was wondering, do you got to the hospital 3-4 times a year for a
"Tune Up" or "Clean Out" as they are called
then on Ivs at home for 2 weeks-even if you are feeling well?
My new Dr wants me to go in 3-4 times a year and then go home on
IV's for 2 weeks after. It makes perfect sense if I am not
feeling well, but I am thinking it is a bit of an over kill if I am
feeling well. And also I want to avoid the chance or
getting hospital bugs at all cost as I only culture staph.
I look forward to your responses-
best wishes to you all-
Big debate issue.

I've tried both lifestyles, and for me doing IVs when I'm well, before I get sick is the way to go. 1st, I can tolerate the IVs better when I'm not too sick. I get the PICC in and go home. (3 weeks usually) Statistically, and can I give you a source, no but I've heard it 100 times-I tell you who probably can and that's Amy, b/c I've heard her talk about this before with a source-(something about Danish people?)people are more healthy when they follow the tune up principle. Using this method got my PFTs up tons-like 40% in 1.5 years. It makes sense to me-why wait to get sick? Why let your poor lungs get to that point? Prevention is worth, what's the saying?-Anyway, why don't people do it? It's a pain, its a big interruption in life.

Personally, you sound like you have a good doctor. Now-I don't think actually being admitted is so good-you're right about infections! That's why I go home with IVs.

Doesn't all this just suck? But we gotta do it one way or another. I just bite the bullet.

My daughter goes to the dr every month for a routine checkup. Then about a week after she is sick...goes on antibiotics for 20 days...time for another monthly checkup. Then we start over. I think she needs to be hospitalized and "cleaned out". I am not looking forward to that day, but I am tired of this roller coaster and so is she. I cant help but think about her long term health since it is so bad now.
Sorry had to vent a little too.

If you only have Staph, I would advise strongly against it. Your chances of picking up PA are so high.... and although Staph is a pain, it's not as virulent by any means as PA. And Staph (unless its MRSA) can be treated with PO antibiotis easily.

I like the tune-up principle. It does interfere with daily life and it sucks to go in when you're not sick, but why wait to be sick and then possibly have to stay on the meds. longer, etc. I never get sent home for IV's anymore. I never feel "better" after getting them and usually end up going in the hospital anyway. I only go in about 1-2 times a year. And most of those times I'm not sick yet, just preventing it.

I feel a lot has to do with your lifestyle. I have not been on IVs for over a year and I need to. I just can't afford to take off work right now so that comes before health at this moment. If I didn't work I would like to go on them much more often but it is not feasible for me

I think it would depend on the person, I haven't been in the
hospital in 16 years (knock on wood) but my pft's are still over
100 and don't usually get infections that drop my pft's very much.
I can usually control them with cipro or keflex., I do
need to use Albuterol and Pulmozyme though or I get very tight and
asthamtic.
