Do you have good posture?

I find myself slumped over a lot. Especially when I'm sicker. Do you all find it easier to breathe when your slumped over, or will it help if I improve my posture. Any suggestions? I'm in such a bad habit of slumping when I sit or stand that after about five minutes of sitting up straight my back begins to hurt.

Interesting... I don't have the best posture either and today in my clinical psych class we learned about diaphramatic breathing and how, if you are sitting up straight, you breath more from your chest and less from your diaphragm... wonder if this could have anything to do with it?

i always breathe from my diaphram; i also have bad posture. i used to think it was only laziness on my part but i now know it is characteristic of many with lung disease. i really hate how it looks and feels to be so slouchy--i do yoga and get massage to try to help it. it is hard to make a conscious effort to change it when, as the original poster said, standing with your shoulders back makes your back sore after a while.

I have a bad posture too. It is very common with people that have lung disease because we use our muscle around that area to breath and cough. If you notice that some cfers have what they refer to as barrel chest. Very round chest, kind of like a swimmer does. Its because we always use those muscle. When I was younger my mom bought me a shoulder brace. It was kinda like the straps from a backpack. It was to hold my shoulders back. It worked when I used it but as a teen I rebeled of course. Im not sure if you can still find it but she bought it at Rite Aid, so you might be able to find it at any drug store. I find that if I sit or stand up straight I can breath deeper than I do when I slouch.

Check my name off for pad posture!! I find it much easier to breathe when i'm slouchy, and same thing when I sleep (in a quasi-fetal position). I also have scoliosis, but I'm not sure whether this affects my posture at all.

To combat this I do lots of upper body work at the gym, either with free weights or the nautilus machines...this helps me a lot. I try to get a massage every once in a while also...u should treat yourself!!!

It is better to have good posture. One way to get better posture is by doing back exericses so your muscles become stronger and can handle the straight posture. I think with all the CF coughing it makes our muscles tighten up (which leads to hunched posture) and stiff which is not good. I have poor posture too, and only when I focus on strengthening my back muscles can I stand straight up and down for longer periods of time without back pain. For me it's lower back muscles that I need to work on.
