MY daughter uses Mucinex but not long term. She runs into trouble with nose bleeds that don't stop. But, her doc will allow her to use it short term. Infact he was the one who recomended it to her. But like I said she is pron to nose bleeds.

Re. those that have been told Mucinex has a drying effect... I don't understand that at all. Guaifenesin (as an expectorant) helps loosen up mucus by thinning it, it is antihistamines- a different type of drug entirely- that dry it out. I'd think those with CF would benefit from products that thin mucus...? Of course, many cold meds do combine decongestants, antihistamines and expectorants all into one product but the original Mucinex is just the expectorant.

I have also heard that it dries the lungs out. And definitely avoid the cough suppressant, but that goes without saying.

So weird Harriett! I don't understand why some CF docs are advising against it due to a drying effect. I fully intend to ask my doc again and get more clarification.

I'm wondering if, as you pointed out, they are thinking that we will take the kind mixed with antihistamines? If that was case though I would think they would just advise that we only take the straight Mucinex. Hmmmmm.

I have been taking Mucinex twice a day for years (and had rx for Guaifenesin before Mucinex was available OTC). My doc said it is completely up to me if I want to take it, and I can tell a difference when I don't take it...so I'm still on it by choice and it seems to help

As for the drying up of mucus...Mucinex doesn't do that; I was told not to take claritin d, and other decongestants that dry you out, but doc said Mucinex is fine

I take 1200mg a day and I notice if I miss a day. It makes coughing up junk a lot easier for me....and I have never felt dried out. I get the plain old Mucinex (guaffenisin) with no added ingredients.
