Do you work?

Hi.... I was going to post this on CF and jobs, but thought it was kinda a digression, so figure I'll post the question here. Just a short survey-like answer will suffice.

1.) Do you work?

2.) How many hours a week?

3.) Do you find (if you currently work) that you feel more run-down having to work and deal with CF?

My answers:

1.) I work from home on my computer very very part time.

2.) About 2-3 hours a night, if I feel like it... or, not at all if I don't feel well.

3.) I do get run-down feeling if I work late into the night on a document or if I spend too much time on the computer typing and neglect my gym routine or treatments because of it.

1) Yes, Ry worked for a long, long time. Until he was on o2 full time, at least parttime work.

2) a regular ol 40 hour workweek before Ahava was born, then partitme like...15 hours a week? after, and then about 5 when I finally made him quit.

3) His work made him keep more up on it when he was working full time, because he loved his work, loved feeling like a contributor in society and in the family, loved his coworkers, being out in the world. After Ahava was born, it wasn;t a problem because he was watching his health for her. It's definitely more work, but he thought it was worth it.

Hope this helped at all.

2. 30 hrs (4 days)

3. No, working is important to me. I like the noramlity of it. Makes me stick to a routine better. I think it helps keep me from being depressed for multiple reasons and I like the independace it affords me. Honelsty, I think I would be worse off if I didn't work.

1> No I don't work, got quite sick in april 05 and decided it was time that I focus on my daughter and family, and being around for them.

2> I was working in a Call center and they have no concern for their employees so I was bounced around from days to nights and back again, until I got a note from my DR stating that For Health reasons I couldn't work past 6pm, Even that didn't stop them from trying to push it some ... 6:15 or 6:30 some nights. I worked at the least 40 hours a week.

3> I was definately run down. I i did when I got home was sleep, not eat, nor take a shower I just slept.

As anything else you'll know when you have had enough and can't handle it no more.

sonia,

I work full time, at least 40 hours normally more. At times when my job gets really stressful I do get run down and then I cut back it back a bit. I am just one of those people that have to be doing something and feel better working or being active than laying around the house even when I don't feel the best.

have a nice day.

Answering for my husband who can't himself for obvious reasons...

Varied by what stage he was in.

In a hurry at first. Worked through high school, Worked during college. After M.S. worked 50-60 hours a week until late 30s afte 3rd failed sinal fusion (State Director for Education for the Deaf by age 35.) Off on SSD then for a while. Then counselor 50 hours a week for a few years (dx of moderate), then part time once on O2 (dx of severe), then scheduled part-time volunteer (after dx of end stage), then nothing but sporadic volunteering for 9 years. Hated nothing.

Yes, he overdid more than once. Burned himself to a frazzle. Lowered his immune system to the point of getting shingles while building an addition to his sister's house. Pacing was never his strong suit.

But working, contributing to society was a joy for him. Not being able to get out and work - help others - was absolutely the hardest thing for him to deal with.

Stopped working in 1/2000
Worked 37 1/2 hours a week (union compromise on the odd hours)
The work itself didnt hurt me, but the stress did. Wouldnt be able to do it now (wanted to work part time) because if I am having a bad day I need to rest. No ifs, ands or buts about it........another reason I dont commit to organizations (PTA etc).

1. Yes
2. I work anywhere from 40-50 hours per week. I work from home though, and don't necesarily work during normal business hours.
3. Not any more. Up until about 8 months ago, I used to travel two weeks a month (Atlanta and Mexico City one week each) and that got me pretty run down. Some days I feel a little run down, but I think that's true for most people.

On a slow week I work 40 hours-- most times like now I am workin about 55-60 hours. So basically I leave the house by 5 to workout before I go to work and yesterday I didn't get home until 8. I completely clear my schedule during the week. I don't go out, just work, workout and sleep. On the weekends I go out and spend time with my boyfriend. It is a daily and weekly balance but I enjoy the life I have. When I am getting mentally run down then I slow down so I only get about 40 hours or so. I actually think that it is my job that keeps me healthy, it is a very active job I love working!!!

1. I do work

2. 40 hours a week

3. It's been a challenge for me over the past 2 years to find a balance between work and health. I have been sick more over the past 2 years than I ever have in my life - no question. But I'm getting better at not overdoing it Cuz I love to work, I love being out there making money, educating my physicians and helping patients.

3. I think it depends on the stress level of your job. When I graduated college I worked with a start up and poured my heart and soul into it. Granted I was still doing all my treatments, I don't think it was good on my body. One thing for sure, I never had any time for working out. I wouldn't trade this experience for anything though because now I am in a different job that pays much better without all the stress. Could I have gotten here without my credentials I earned in the first - nope! I definitely don't think I'd be healthier if I didn't work at all... for me getting out and having relationships / involvement with the world is critical to my wellness. Now if I had a reason to stay home - like a baby that's another story. Life's a balance.

This is AWESOME!!! Thanks for all the responses! I was sort of expecting to get a lot more responses like mine... i.e. "I'd love to work, but with my health and the time everything takes.... etc. etc...."....

Its simply GREAT to hear how motivated everyone is! And, what wonderful contributors to society! Thanks again for responding. Keep 'em comin'!

I don't currently work. I just can't. To work I would sacrifice my health and my free time because I would be so exhausted I would come home and go to bed. Same with school....I was homeschooled because it got to a point where I got up, went to school, came home, went to sleep. No free time because I had NO energy

So for me the benefits of not working outweigh the ones of working.

I have more issues than just CF though. I guess that might come in play. And if I ever found a decent part time job I would take it.

Most days I just don't have any energy and running errands wears me out!

1. yes
2. >60 hours --1 full time 40 hour job as a teacher, and 2 part time jobs
3. I do get run down, but I also think it is more form the classroom. It's a tough job ( I work in a very poverty stricken, tough as nails, inner city school).
But, I love my jobs, and I can't imagine not working. I worked all through highschool, and college. If I had to stop working, I would probably end up divorced. Or dead because my husband would kill me form running all over the house. I have way too much energy.
