Do your antidepressants work?

anti depressants are given to many patients who don't have low seratonin levels. so for those who don't have this chemical imbalance, it doesn't work.

notice how the article mentions mild-moderately depressed patients. some docs will give their patients meds to them if they don't have a chemical imbalance.

it's important to understand how anti-depressants, or SSRI's, work otherwise this article can be misleading.

i take lexapro and it has made such a difference. I couldn't get out of bed most days before I started seeing a therapist and taking the meds. I've had a complete turnaround. I'm sure that the therapy is also playing a big part in this as well and should not be neglected as a factor.

Mine absolutely make a huge difference.

I think that that article is misleading in some ways because it ignores that anti-depressant medications only work in addressing chemical imbalances, and not all causes of depression. If the depression is not chemically based, of course the anti-depressants won't work. A person who is just going through a rough time shouldn't be prescribed these medications in the first place. By saying that anti-depressants only work for the "severely depressed" I think that this article is bringing back the stigma that is often attached to anti-depressant use and can potentially discourage patients who have the chemical imbalances and need the medications not to take them because they don't want to be labelled as "severely" depressed or don't feel like their depression reaches that level.

**Steps of Soapbox** (Sorry, this issue can just really get me going!)

I will never ever go off my antidepressants. After my total meltdown in September I have been taking Celexa religiously and the difference is AMAZING!!! I still have days where I don't want to function but I am now able to pull myself out of the funk whereas before I would let it take over.
