I'm currently going to school to become a pediatric cardio-thoracic surgeon. To me the pro's out weighed the con's, and so far I've been completely happy with my choice.

You may want to take a look at Victor Roggli's story on this page: http://www.clubcysticfibrosis.com/index.php/site/category/fiftyplus

He is a lung pathologist and professor at Duke. I think he's still working and was born in 1951. He's written a book about his story (unpublished). There seem to be quite a few people who are doctors with CF. Recently a young man became a surgeon in Britain and the author of Notes on Performance (which included a chapter on CF) mentioned another doctor he worked with in the OR who had CF. In the East of Canada, there is a family physician with CF who had a transplant at 40 and is continuing with his family practice. (His patients fund-raised for him to pay costs that weren't covered, related to the transplant, so he could return home to his practice.)

Here's an article about Dr. Jack Jacoby - CF doctor with cf.
http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20118813,00.html
Jack has passed on.
He has a brother Jeff who was a cf floor nurse at some point. Not sure on his status now though.
The Jacoby's started a foundation and I'm sure they would be willing to speak to you about their thoughts on 2 of the their 3 children choosing medicine. By the way, their third child Jamie died from cf complications when she was 9.

Really something like this has always been blocked in my mind because of Pseudo (specially my multi resistent strains) and well other bugs we tend to catch easily.</div><div>I know you are packed in very sterile as a surgeon, but still.</div>

I'm a dentist...and I've been in the dental field for 20 years. I was diagnosed 6 years ago...I love dentistry but if I knew I had cf before I would have chosen another career...and be in less contact with infections. good luck with your choice!

There was Deron Arnold from MN who I believe was a pathologist. He was on the transplant list a couple years ago and continued to work; however, I believe when he was transplanted there were issues with whatever bacteria he cultured.
