Does a tune up mean iv?

In my experience, yes. The whole tuneup package for me is IV medications, increased and intense airway clearance, and resting.

Unless you do it like me :) I did all the IVs at home. Cause I'm D.I.Y.! :)

Yes, tune-up means IV, though not necessarily in the hospital. I always get my IV's/PICC's placed via out-patient services and do everything at home. Much safer and most restful for me. :)

Thanks all! We're aren't there but trying to mentally prepare, as we freak re hospitals and infections and have witnessed some really horrible things this last week re infection control with f-I-l in hospital....aide cleaning privates then opens door with same gloves she used to clean...guy next door had c-diff. So hopefully won't need for ds for a long time and also planned to do home iv as soon as they would let, but just also wondered if IVs were part of it ALWAYS or if not then we can easily do the "normal" x4 or 6 if that was it. Thanks again!
I still "laugh" how when I asked a simple question like this at an early appointment they said "we find people cope better if they just take it a day at a time." I'm like that's not how everyone copes honey (mentally of course!). I do better knowing what will be and thinking through it....so thanks all!!!

I've had more than 105 tune ups for CF exacerbations in my lifetime and EVERYONE has involved venous access. Whether this be by peripheral IV, PICC, Midline, Port, femoral access or other, it is always done with the intention of gaining access to the vasculature for the purpose of providing antibiotic therapy. Put another way, I've never NOT have an IV during a tune up, as that is the time I am at my worse and oral abx just don't cut it...so pull out the Big Guns and load me up with IV abx.

I'm with Welsh. I don't even bother going into the hospital anymore, it's just added costs. If the docs want to put me on IVs they can order it and I'll drive to wherever to get it "installed". I've been fortunate enough not to have too many of these, hoping to keep that up.

I am a do it at home person as well, thankful for the port, but for some strange reason I do not know how or why? I hv not needed IV's for almost 5yrs now. I am not counting the 2 recent stays last year and this past Jan. for the pancreasas. in the hospital. I am on a oral all year round and we mix that up as well occasionally but it's some kind of miracle for sure, and don't know why???
