and geographically, where would you be going? just curious.</end quote>

I live in Pittsburgh, PA, so it's pretty cold here right now.

I wouldn't actually be going with the friends I was talking to - it was just a "catch up" kind of get together with them. I'm kind of scared to go to a climbing center myself though, I hate to be new at stuff and not know what I'm doing! There are a few places around here that have beginner classes though, I'd probably go here: http://www.theclimbingwall.net/ since it's pretty close to me.

I'm just pretty clueless about this all. I guess I'd rent all my equipment to start.. then after that if I got into it I should buy my own shoes at least? (I have visions of their rental shoes being like scary bowling rental shoes) Any kind you recommend?

I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions once I actually know what to ask, but thanks for replying. It sounds like it helped you stay in good shape for quite a while. I love that it seems like a good mental challenge as well as physical.

Skye, thanks for your input too. I've just started walking recently and changed my path (I live in the city) so I go up a hill and it's great. Sadly there aren't any actual hiking trails near me, but maybe I can check some out in the summer.
