We get a different type it's CF related Diabetes. It's because our pancrease doesn't function properly due to the mucous and also scarring I believe. I am diabetic. I have had it since I was 15. Basically my opening where I secrete insulin is damaged or something like thst! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

hi, cystic fibrosis related diabetes is different than the normal diabetes because it requires no diet and u can still eat all the sweets u want. You dont have to worry about changing ur eating habbits. besides, there have been no recorded complications of cfrd till now in cfers.

Sarah,

I have been diabetic fo 18 years now. It is under excellent control and my 3 month check came back at a 4.3..... !!!

Reasons for people with CF getting diabetes.

1. As you get older, you have encountered more lung infections. Lung infections scar the lungs of course, but also damage can be in the pancrease. So the more lung infections, the more likely you are to get diabetes. Not always true though... so don't feel that you WILL get it. I know people who have had many lung infections and are not diabetic.

2. Prednisone. - Many with CF are either on a maintenance dose of prednisone or have a bollus treatment to treat infection. Most times the people on the maintenance doses are more likely to get diabetes.

3. Transplant - Those who have a tx have a greater chance of getting diabetes. Sometimes it is just temporary, as the prednisone dose you take post tx is reduced, then your body goes back to being able to produce a enough insulin. Most lung recipients are on maintenance dose of prednisone... but I am happy to say that UPMC is doing lung tx and not putting some of their patients on prednisone, becuase these patients were given the drug CAMPATH at tx time. I do not understand or know much about this drug and why it eliminates the need for prednisone, but it sounds great.

i originally got diabetes from prednizone, and had full-fledged diabetes, taking insulin and everything for the 6 months i was on prednizone...now that i have not been on prednizone for years now, i still have a border-line diabetes, meaning that if i have ALOT of sugar at once, my sugar levels will increase, and ill start to feel fatigue etc.....my doctors told me though, that when i get a bit older (im almost 20) i will get full fledged diabetes most likey....and yes i have a 'diet'..basically not to eat a lot of sugar
i too have diabetes in my family(grandparents have it), so i think that may somewhat increase my chances of getting it...
but if u have not gottan diabetes yet, than i would not be too worried, because as i understand most people dont have as bad diabetes ...as the other posters said, its a different type of diabetes (although for me, im most likely to get the regular diabetes....oh well)
but you should not have to worry about it just yet....if you are you can talk to your doctor about it
LATER!

My doc also said that if you notice that you need more enzymes or a stronger dosage, it could be a sign you may get diabetes..

Wow thanks for all your replies. But unfortunatly it just made me more worried. I have been on a regular dose of prednizone for about 8 or 9 years now, and have been gradually increasing the amount of Enzymes I take so all the signs you guys have mentioned I seem to be going through. But I really thank you for all the facts you gave me, I was cluless on this subject till now.
