I am without insurance. I recieve a pension which puts me over the income limits to qualify for our state insurance. I was looking into possibly moving to Massachusette so that we can all get health care coverage, through the state program instuitued by Mitt Romney. I am willing to pay a monthly premium, just need insurance as I can not get a private policy because of pre existing conditions.

Does anyone no more about MassHealth and how good/bad it is, especially how would it be for coverage of my son's CF.....Copays/deductables....do most doctors and hospitals accept the stae insurance?

We live in Massachusetts. Everybody in this state must have health insurance. I have Tufts as our primary and Mass Health is secondary but only on my daughter. Because she has CF and it falls under disability the state will cover her. I pay a very small premium for the state insurance which is based on income and family size and disability of person being covered. They cover almost everything. Go to the state web site and you can look up the information. I would not move out of this state not only because of the insurance but also because of the doctors. We use Children's in Boston. You can pm me if you wnat to ask me anything.

Hi there,

I was denied MassHealth on two occasions due to income. I have a primary insurance though so it wasn't a huge deal for me, although it would have been nice to have secondary for my copays. All Mass residents are now required to have insurance, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will come easy. That means you will have to buy it if you can't get it by other means.

But most doctors' offices do take MassHealth as insurance although I know some that do not. The reimbursement rate is so terrible that some just don't take it.

Cheryl-
It sounds like you qualified for your daughter's MassHealth pretty easily even though you have a primary insurance. Do you think maybe I filled out the paperwork wrong? I also thought I would qualify for MassHealth secondary but they said my spouse and I made too much money and had access to other health insurance...??? Thanks!

My boys also qualified for MassHealth and then Common Health but we chose not to join. My insurance covers pretty much everything and it wasn't worth it for us. Having other insurance didn't seem to matter.

Talk to your clinic social worker. Ours was very helpful.
