it is a very common drug to treat staph but i guess you don't see it mentionned often b/c many people are allergic to it (my dd is). we use bactrim or rifadine+fucidine when we suspected allergies to Bactrim

Early last year I started to feel an exacerbation coming on, and I called the doc.She asked if I'd ever been on Augmentin before, I said I'd never heard of it. Up until this point, no oral antibiotics had ever kept an exacerbation at bay. I always had to do ivs. Well Augmentin is now my wonder drug! I have used it 3 different times when I started to feel like I was getting sick, and I haven't had to be hospitalized. I culture Pseudo and MRSA.

Both my daughters use Augmentin w/ a cough and both culture Staph...usually the cause of the cough and usually Augmentin is the first abx we try for that <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">) My 6 year old just finished a 21 day cycle of it actually!

My littlest also cultures Psuedo, so she uses Bactrim and Cipro often as well.

Emily's staph was initially sensitive to it and her drs wanted to try it. However, she cannot take this med- severe adverse reaction in the past. Now, even if we were willing, it wouldn't be effective. As I understand it, Augmentin and Bactrim are the most common first-line meds to use for staph exacerbations before resistance starts becoming an issue.

eta> We had great success for a while with Bactrim. Then we had to add Keflex, which only worked twice. Then we tried something else (can't remember what) that she's also now resistant to. Bactrim still helps, but not as much as it used to. Last time, we started with Bactrim and ended up on Levaquin.
