Hi, i am new to this sight and not very computer literate so bare with me. I have a 1yr old daughter with cf and was wondering wether it would be a good idea to start her on some probiotics, as they help with the gut. She is also on antibiotics for the fisrt 3yrs of her life, as clinic has advised us to do as a precautionary measure. So it has been mentiioned to me by a few people that it might be a good idea. I was hoping to hear from some adults who might have some more knowlege and would like to know if it has helped them in any way.

Yes.. I use Probiotics.. They are amazing... I am not on them all the time.. I start them the day I start antibiotics... sometimes I don't start them on orals right away because they are so expensive (at least the kind that works for me) but when I start IVs I am always on them.. and what a difference.... I haven't had C diff or thrush or yeast while taking them at all.. I also take acidophillis.. a very strong concentration .. can't remember what right now and I am nebbing....

I was first introduced to them by a GI Dr in NYC and now all my doctors order it for me as soon as I go inpatient.. .sO I can have it there as well

Hello

I have been taking Acidolphilus for so many years. I recently had a transplant and was given something similar to what I take through the feeding tube. I was on a ton of meds.

I would buy Jarrow brand dairy free acidolphilus. They come in pill formula. I would keep them all in the refridgerator. They have the Jarrow caps that you do not have to keep cool. Those are great for travel.

You will see a difference in a few days or maybe sooner. I take two caps three times daily.

Thankyou both for your response, i might try this on my daughter starting next week and see how i go. Many people have said it has helped them feel good since taking the probiotics. My baby will be on antibiotics for the next 2yrs, so i hope it will benefit her.
I am willing to try anything that might keep her in good health. I am aslo doing some research on some natural medicines as i am interested in trying them, so please if you have any ideas on what might be suitable for a 1yr old baby let me know.

Also Jeniffer, i have read some of your posts and have seen that you have not been well. I hope things get better for you and i'm sure they will, you seem to be such a positve person and good on you!

Hi Eli

I would be careful on natural medicines. IF so, seek a professional in this area who works with babies. All natural remedies are good when given correctly but for babies I am not sure. They are still growing and some of these natural wonders can become Toxic to their little precious bodies. I am not saying not to try something but not sure what is safe for babies. If you ask a doctor and they are not sure and they do not take this, listen to them. There was a time when my doctor said no and I did not listen. I Was very sorry.

Sounds like you are a Super Mom. I believe you emailed me last week?

Hi Risa,

At the moment i am just looking at what natural medicines are avilable, i am not planning to start her on any as yet or without any proffesional advice.
I have a friend that see's a doctor that practices natural medicines, and i am just looking at his ideas.
She too has a baby with cf, and has tried a few things in minimal doses, and finds it to be helpfull.

Hi Eli, my daughter is 2.5 and has been taking probiotics since she was about 16 months old. They have really helped her digestion - i really realized the difference when I ran out of them and didn't give them to her for a week.

Also want to make sure you know about a board on yahoo called CF Nutrition. There are some really knowledgeable people there who can help give you some ideas on what might help your daughter. If you go to yahoo and do a search, you can find the board. It is private so you just have to apply for membership (may take a day or so to get approved).

HTH,
Kelli - mom of Sydney 2.5 wcf

my daughter got bad stomach aches from probiotics...the cipro was bad enough on its own, then even worse with probiotics.

Hi kelli,

I just had a look on Yahoo, and there seems to be alot of CF NUTRITION sites.
I was wondering if you could please tell me which one you had in mind, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi to all,
I have another question about porbiotics, i just started my daughter on cyto bifidus, and her stool motions have become more frequent. She used to poo 3 to4 times and now its 5 -6 times a day and only has 1/4 tsp once a day.
Is this normal with taking probiotics. Please let me know

Thanks Eli
