I have more bleed when I am not sick.....my doctor use to tell me that I had to have an infection brewing when I had active bleeds until it happen during an admission. I am prone to bleeds when I am due for my period (love the hormones), when I drink too much caffein, when I am overtired and when I strain while physically exerting. There are times when I think I have not over done it & then that night...gurgle, gurgle I feel in my chest. I have controlled them at home with ice water, ice packs & vitamin K. Never had any procedure for them. When I am in the hospital them give me shots of Vitamin K during the 24 hours of a bleed if its more than streaking.

For me it basically means there is a spot on my lung that is "worn out" & the capillaries are very sensitive thus the bleeds without an infection being there. For some bleeds are definite indictators of an infection.

I get this quite frequently. Just a littl pinkish streaking - mixed in with mucus. I told the doc and he said it can happen if you cough hard or excessively. It can wear the blood vessels out. I usually take a neb treatment of albuterol and it helps in most cases.
I used to get worried about it all the time when it first started happening, but now I just think - okay was I coughing alot earlier - or doing anything reallly strenious (?spelling).
I also notice sometimes too I have streaks of blood in my mucus in the winter alot - I also tend to get nosebleeds alot in the winter if the air is drier. I just assume sometimes the blood is from my nose if I blow my nose and their is blood.

I had very serious and heavy bleeding at one point and I wasn't sick at the time. I was coughing up cups of blood, and ended up having to go for a bronch. They found nothing of course, and the problem continued and got worse. I ended up having to go for an embolization. Every now and then I still get bits of bleeding. But my doc said the reason for my bleeding was a coroded vien in my lung from repeat infections in the same area.

I've had bleeding problems for years, nothing serious till 3 years ago. I had a very large hemoptysis twice and had to have two embolizations. The reason for bleeding is the blood vessels get twisted and can enlarge and of coarse weaken. Also infection can play a role. Hormonal changes coinciding with a womans menstral cycle is also a cause. I had both massive hemoptysis's a few days before my period. I still have smaller episodes ( thank God) of bleeding here and there, and it is usually the same thing that causes them. Timing of my menstral cycle, coughing too hard ,too long, or laying flat. Laying flat used to be a cause of my bleeding in the past quite often. I stopped laying /sleeping flat 3 years ago after my second embolization.

Wow girl, let me tell you about coughing up blood. My fiancee, David, is very healthy and has CF. We are both 21. His pft's are at 96. He usually coughs up a little blood here and there, but about a month ago it was terrible. He went into the bathroom to spit out some sputum he had just coughed up, and he came back out and his face was white. I went to look in the sink, and it was completely covered in blood. On the way to the hospital he was still spitting it up. When we got there, the doctor called his specialist, and they both said it was completely normal for this to happen. It is just a capillary bursting. They put him on oral antibiotics and sent him home. He sees Dr. Robett Stern at Rainbow Babies and Children in Cleveland, Oh and has since he was a baby. So I wouldn't fret to much about it. I hope you are feeling well. Take it one breath at a time.

It is definitely scary, even when you know it's normal. I've been having small bleeds on a semi-regular basis for years now; when I have more infection going on it can be a couple times a week or more, the last few years I've been doing pretty well so it's usually more like once a month or once every few months -- but every time I feel that flutter in my chest and get that taste in my mouth my heart always drops. There's just something so freaky about spitting blood and knowing it's coming from your lungs... a lot of CF symptoms can be kinda "written off" in a way, because everyone coughs or has digestive problems at some point, but coughing up blood is just in a totally different league. It always makes me feel really SICK, if you know what I mean, and I hate it. So yes, coughing up blood is unfortunately normal for CF patients, but it's normal to be scared about it too!

My wife had alot of bleeds the worst was in an airplane at 33000ft. We were freaking out most of her bleeds were small but at the worst times, once it happened in the middle of the jungle in a cabanna and of course in an airplane. She could usually tell when they were going to happen and used vitamin K once a day for them. Three embolizations later and they stopped. She told me about one before we were married were she needed 5 or 6 liters.Stay away from asprin and I'm not sure about garlic
