Does coughing hurt my baby?

So I watched an ultrasound video and during the ultrasound the lady coughed and the baby was pretty violently jarred inside the placenta!!

Lots of CFer's have had healthy babies, but I was wondering if causing the baby to be bounced around can cause any damage?

malnutrition causes more problems than coughing. In fact, it is speculated that cf moms deliver babies earlier because of the baby not getting enough nutrition. For this reason they are always on the lookout for IUGR (interuterine growth restraint). As my doctor said, our bodies have had 20 plus years to get used to the resp. restraints but the leech (baby) is something it's never had to deal with.

I was paranoied of this myself when I first got pregnant. In my first trimester I would cough so hard I would throw up many times. I asked my Peri and my CF doc and they both reassured me that in no way can caughing hurt the baby. The pressure that is produced by a cough is minimal and the baby is protected by the uterus. Please don't worry about the coughing. My peri said it was better that I coughed and got any mucus up than to try to hold back. If you still feel nervous about it talk to your OB. After I spoke with mine I felt much more at ease about it.

CF Moms cough......the babies get "use" to it. It would seem normal to worry about such a thing, but those babies are really quite protected from "jarring".

Like it has been said nutrition is more important & maybe 02 needs if that has become an issue, but coughing.....heck no.

I found if anythng it helped with being a Mom with CF. My daughter could & still can sleep though any coughing fit I have. She doesnt know any different. WIsh I could say the same <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">
