does everyone culture Staph?

I have a theory: Since all people show staph aureus in the nasal passages, and how most CF's have sinus problems with drainage into the lungs, etc...I bet that is how most of us "get it".</end quote></div>

When my sinuses are playing up, I show a much higher staph growth in my sputum. Sometimes I don't culture it at all, but only when my sinuses are completely clear (which isn't often).

I believe Staph is most common on skin (on anybody). It is easily spread from direct contact. As lightnlife said, its the amount that becomes the concern. It colonizes in our lungs to form an infection.

I have cultured it when i was very young but was treated for it and it went away. After that i went on a continious antibiotic called Flucloxacilline (or Floxapen) and i never cultured it again. My lungs stayed clear of it.

This treatment is very common here in Europe, or at least it is here in the Netherlands and in Brittain too, i've read about it on the boards there.

That's awesome that you had such good luck with Floxapen. It's a rather narrow spectrum beta-lactam (so it's in the family with Merrem). Usually it takes a combination Floxapen with Vancomycin.
