Does he really need enzymes?

Hi! I just wanted to let you know what I found out today. I talked to our CF doctor. He told me to go ahead and drop to 1/2 enzyme this week (we have clinic next week). See how he does, then we will test him on Wednesday. While less likely that a DDF508 is pancreatic sufficient, is does happen. As far as him being insufficient as a baby, he said some baby's pancreas needs a jumpstart and then functions on it's own. Or, he may possibly be the child that only needs enzymes when he eats a very high fat meal. We are hopeful. I will let you all know what we find out next week. Thanks for your help!

The only thing I would worry about is the fact that you said he strains a lot. My daughter is PI, and has always been overweight. She has bulky stools that cause her to strain, and now she is having issues with rectal prolapse...twice in the last two months. So even though her weight is good, we have had to up her enzymes. I'm sure the test results will tell you what you need to do, but the straining is something to watch out for.

But straining is a catch 22 too- I am DDF508, and mostly PI and a bit overweight (I take an enzyme with greasy meals and with dinner with my vitamin as an adult, no enzymes as a teen), and I was on too many enzymes for my childhood years, which caused constipation/bloating/excessive gas. When I needed an enzyme as a adult, I went through all of them until my GI gave me Viokase, which finally did what I needed it too (took care of the greasy meals/vitamins) without "plugging me up".

No, nothing about this is simple, unfortunately <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> . You will get it sorted out though ((hugs)).

Yes, I agree. It is a difficult thing to regulate. My thoughts were that the straining has come because he doesn't need the enzyme. Medically, if he needed more enzymes, he should not be absorbing calories, making him thin. Oh well...I hope we get answers next week. Thanks for all of your input :)
