Does size or brand matter with regards to Ports?

With a pending portacath placement should I be picky about the size or brand of the device placed? I mentioned a low profile one to my dr and he said they have a higher failure rate so he usually avoids them. Any thoughts on this subject people?

My Anna had a low profile port placed in 2003 and didn't have to have it replaced until 2006. She had a new one placed when the old one was removed and (knock on wood)it's still working.

She was 16 when her first one was placed and had always been against getting a port. It was completely due to her being a teenage girl and not wanting something sticking out in any way. Having CF was hard enough. The guy that placed it was a hard headed SOB and didn't listen when she asked it be placed as low as possible and on a particular side. She'd been told that she could tell them which side and where she wanted it placed. She was not a happy girl when it was done and over. He refused to move it. She ended up having it moved at the children's hospital and was a completely different girl afterwards. Much happier.

Anna had/has her port in her chest. It is a low profile and is actually fairly deep. It does not stick out at all. No visible lump at all. You can feel it but all you really see is her scar. If you look at her picture in my signature, Anna is wearing the turquoise shirt. Her port is on her right side right about where her ends, just at her shirt edge or just below.

She's been told she could get one under her arm (bicep area)or on her side. Her CF clinic had a "demo" to show her what it looked like and had told her to put on her bathing suit and draw a dot/circle where she wanted it placed. They'd showed her the different spots she could have it placed.

They gave her a wallet card saying what kind it was but she's got that with her.

Hope you are able to get what you are looking for.

I've had what my doctors called a "child-sized" port for almost 4.5 years now. The smaller the port, the harder it is to insert the needle each month. I've learned to do it myself, but before I learned, nurses probably only hit it just right about 50% of the time. It's not very visible at all in my chest, but is more difficult to hit. Hope that helps.
