well tomorrow is my last day of the 14 days i have been on antibiotics. i am on IV meropenem and oral minocyclin. i started out getting the flu 2 days before Christmas(btw i did have the flu shot), which then turned into what i suspected was a lung infection. i never went to the doc. i just called and asked to be put on IV meds because my lungs felt so crappy. so they did. i didnt really see much change while on these meds until the last 3 days. i dont know if the initial flu virus just wasnt out of my system yet and that is why i continued to feel bad. Well for the the past 3 days i have been coughing up tons of mucus. so i thought is this a good thing or a bad thing. obviously its good that it is coming out....but why so much more mucus production now at the end of my antibiotics. do you think it is the infection finally clearing itself out, and if so should i not be ending my meds tomorrow if its just now starting to work....??? or do you think this means it has done its job? i feel better overall...just tons of mucus, and it comes up with a vengence. the sensation feel like it does right before i have hemoptysis..like something is about to errupt, but instead of blood it is lots of mucus. ( brownish grey)yuck.. any advice or thoughts would be great!!!!

Does it come up in pudding-like globs? This was recent occurrence for me as well, also felt like hemoptysis. Doc says it's a good thing, which I figured. There's a good chance it could be beneficial to stay on IVs. But I'd definitely run it by your doc/nurse.

I think that the increased mucus production shows that the IV antibiotics are definitely working. However, sometimes it takes more than two weeks and an extra week is needed, so my advice is to ask to add on another week...what could it hurt?

But overall, the increased mucus production is a good sign. Your lungs are getting rid of the infection, or trying, they're doing exactly what the antibiotics are meant to help do. Even after an extra third week, you could still be having coughing attacks but it should get better.

Hope this helps.

thank you so much for your inputs. my doctor seemed to think that it was a good thing too. but to be safe she is having me stay on ivs one week longer, along with changing my oral minocyclin to bactrim. i guess since the meds didnt start working until the last couple days an extra week is good. thanks again!!!

The last time I was on IV's which was last May I was on for 3 weeks in hospital, then another 2 at home so I'd suggest asking for another 1-2 weeks. The fact you're bringing up more mucus is a good sign, keep clearing it
