does your doctor treat staph?

My brother cultured staph, but in the little letter they mail us giving our clinic results, they said that they don't treat staph. this just seems weird, like..if its there, don't you want to take care of it? or is it just that they don't treat it unless you have problems.. or is it really just not that big of a deal? i don't even know what sort of antibiotic they'd use to treat it.
hmm it just seems weird to me, because i have PA and do tobi, even though i have no symptoms. any experience? thanks<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Lauren cultures staph aureus almost all the time. They only treated it once because she had other symptoms. She cultures it so often, even when she is healthy, that they seem to consider it as part of her normal flora.

About 3 years ago every culture I had was showing staff so they put me on Azithromycin as a preventative measure. I'm also on TOBI for PA. I would ask the reasoning is for not treating it. In my experience everytime I would begin with a mild staph infection it would just get worse, my PA would flare up and I'd be on an IV in the end. If your brother is coughing more, producing more I would definately want to have it treated.

Not unless it is causing a problem. If you go in and try to kill the staph, then the other more aggressive bacteria will grow in to replace it. A plain old staph, gram positive, is considered less dangerous then say a gram negative. So if you treat your staph you should treat your gram negative bacteria, like a PA, at the same time. Since gram negative bacteria are more likely to become resistant to antibiotics you don't want to treat for them unless you need too.
