At a large veternary hospital, scientists report that over a 3 year period, 38 dogs, cats & other pets caught a drug resistant staph infection. They think 6 of the anmals caught the bug from the hospital workers, but its likely that at least some of the cases were spread to pets by the owners. Its not necessarily that you come home, pet the animal & they get sick. Its estimated that 1 in every 100 people carry such a bacteria in their noses that could be transmitted by closer contct. Many people pick up the animals, kiss them & let them lick us. Then they lick their skin. Tho this bacterial infection is typically hard to treat, all the pets recovered. The dogs developed skin/ear infections, cats got urinary tract infections, parrators had skin infections & the rabbit an ear infeciton. Researchers dont kniw if the bacteria spread from animal to animal, althought dogs dont nautrally harbor them.
