i did manual chest pt for a few days after and then went back to using my vest with the right strap undone to relieve pressure over the port site (when it was brand new). now that its healed i don't even feel it when i'm' doing the vest. when its accessed i fold up a wash cloth and put it over the site and that works for me. hth!

My vest came with a small square of foam rubber type stuff that was specifically designed to fit between the accessed port and the vest. It works pretty well, but I've found that putting a beanie baby (or a similar little stuffed critter) is much more comfy

My advice is pretty much the same. I'd wait at first and then EASE into using the vest. Maybe really lower the pressure/frequency until she is not sore & can get used to it.

I use my vest all the time. It is occasionally uncomfortable when I am accessed but not usually. I like to wear my bathrobe when I do my vest, that way I have a little cushion to it. But the foam idea sounds great too.

Good luck, I hope she heals quickly. My last port placement (in my chest, I used to have it in my L. forearm) was so easy. I remember being tender for just a few days and then I was fine. I LOVE my port. Wouldn't want it any other way. I hope it is a blessing to her!

Good luck & prayers to Hayley.

I have to say, I think I'm in the minority here- I never have felt a difference vesting with my port accessed or not. I'm on continuous IV meds, and so I'm always accessed. I'm vesting as we speak, actually, lol, and don't feel anything. The first few days after the surgery, I did chest PT, and then switched to the vest, but with the shoulder of the side my port was on open, until the soreness was gone.
