Double Lumen Port

I have had the double lumen PICC. In the hospital they used one for abx & fluids, the other for TPN. WHen I came home. One was for abx & the other for blood draws.

That being said I have never had a PORT, but I know a few members who have had double lumen ports. I remember one of the biggest problems being their home health agencies not being familiar with it so accessing it was difficult as they kept attempting as it was a single lumen. In doing this they kept missing it because what they thought was the center was actually inbetween the 2 lumens.

I hope you get some more feed back!

My first ever port that I had placed in 2001 was a double and then when I was getting it replaced in 2006 I requested another double because it was so much easier. There were times that I was on two IV meds at once and it was much better to have two lumens accessed than to have a single lumen and then have to have an IV or PICC.

When I was first seen at Cleveland Clinic, they had never seen a double. I thought that was really strange since they are a very high tech and up to date hospital! Anyway, I loved mine! I have since had it taken out though. I didn't need it anymore after the tx.

I didn't even know there was a "double" port, but Briceton has blood levels (Tobramycin, etc..) and his yearly labs drawn through his "single" port, he has the BardPort.

Hey thanks to everyone who responded!!

Sherry, they draw Tobra levels through his single lumen port? My doctor and CF nurse tell me that is not an option, however, nurses here on the floor tell me they have seen it done. They said they they just flush with saline twice before drawing the peak. Everyone agrees that the trough can be drawn from the port, but it's the peak that's a problem.

It looks like I will be getting my port placed on Friday. As it stands I am leaning toward the single lumen "Power Port". The double doesn't come in the power port and it seems quite a bit larger. They also tell me that with two lumens there is double the infection risk. I can still see benefits to having the double lumen, but for right now I'm still leary of my center's lack of experience with them and the fact that they have never really seen one before!!

Feel free to keep your opinions/advice coming! I still haven't made a concrete decision. Thanks again for the replies, they were helpful.
