Dr. Advised Hypertonic THEN Pulmozyme

Sean had clinic today, which BTW went very well for the first time in a long time, so I asked his Dr. what she thought about the HS/Pulmozyme order and if she'd seen the study. She indicated that there are actually a few studies (some ongoing and some that are completed) evaluating the sequence of inhaled meds. Beyond the general order (i.e. Bronchodilator, Mucolytics, Inhaled antibiotic, Long acting bronchodilator, then Inhaled steroids), she is recommending to patients that are on both HS and Pulmozyme to experiment and see what works best for them.

Hello,

I got an email reply from my doc's nurse today and she said after discussing it at their recent clinic meeting they decided until they see an actual study recommending to switch the order, she would keep it how I've been doing it (Pulmo. THEN H.S.), so I will keep doing it that way.

It is always interesting how different doctors view treatments for this disease. I have yet to find a study supporting either order of H.S. and pulmo., so I guess I"m with those who say to do what your clinic recommends OR what works best for you.

My personal experience is that the thinning of mucus after pulmozyme starts about 4-5 hours later...

Interesting! I've never been able to actually know when my mucus feels thinner during the day... the only time I can tell its easier to cough out is when I'm doing my treatments and huff coughing and stuff. But, I dont' think it ever actually "feels" thinner, just easier to get out. That's pretty darn cool if you get such good results that you can feel it!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> I'd be really interested to see at what point pulmo. actually changes the makeup of our gunk. I know growing up, my doctors said if I skip any nebbed med at all, make sure its NOT pulmozyme as that one must be done every single day no matter what to reap its benefits. Not sure why he said that and I always did all my nebbs anyway, but when they'd always ask "how many times in the last month have you missed?", they always said you should never ever ever miss pulmo. wierd. (I wasn't on inhaled antibiotics at the time, so they would have said that about those too, I think.) Anyway, I digress....
