Dread going to the dentist

Hey there,
I worked as a dental assistant for many years. I just wanted to mention that a good hygienist will work with you on a postition that is comfortable during cleanings. They have been trained to do this in school. Please don't feel that you are inconveniencing the dental staff by coughing or needing to sit up. That is their job!! Also, I would not recommend skipping routine cleaning appts. Especially due to the many oral and nebbed meds that Cfers take, it is very important to keep teeth and gums healthy. Many meds can be very drying to the gums, which leads to bacteria growth and decay.

Thanks for the comments. I did tell the hygienist about my CF and need to cough and she was very good about it. (Although her first comment was if my CF was progressive, which I thought was an odd and sobering question.) I guess the coughing just bothers me. Especially, when I unexpectedly coughed and both she and I were surprised. I did joke with her that no one has ever stabbed me with the cleaning tool.

I regularly go in every six months, not when I'm sick though. I'm not considering not going at this point, however, I was curious if anyone else had gone that far because of CF.

I will have to ask about the chair position. I'd consider a cough suppressant, but those never work for me. Not even tessalon pearl (unsure of spelling) anymore.

Yeah cough drops just make things worse for me, and don't quit going to the dentist, unless you want to look like most of my neighbors here in Indiana.

Ever since i discovered gas i actually look forward to going to the dentist!! I reckon dentists must have the best ever after work parties on a Friday <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

I have told her about my CF and only go when i'm feeling quite well. I simply warn her if i'm about to cough and they remove their tools from my mouth for a moment. I'm always so wasted i find the whole thing quite amusing, i'm usually floating up on the ceiling somewhere afte the first two minutes anyway, they could club me over the head and i'd find it amusing, i'm greedy with that gas!!
