drinking alcohol with mild CF

It's safe to drink alcohol if you have CF. However, remember that alcohol slows down your body. That can interfere with being able to cough productively. Also, alcohol has a dehydrating effect which may make your mucus even more dry than usual.

Know your limits with alcohol and be safe. Don't mix it with medications, and don't drink on an empty stomach. Be sure to drink plenty of water

If you have an asthma component to your CF, you should be careful to avoid beverages that have tannins and sulfites. Tannins act as an astringent (drying agent) which may give you a terrible headache, and sulfites are known to cause strong reactions in people with asthma.

All great advice. The thing is, people need something "bad" to do. Either it's sporadically gorging on chocolate, eating big macs a couple times a week, or drinking. It's very very very hard to be a human and not have one single thing that you enjoy that is bad for you. I drink, but I pretty much stick with beer. I drink beer with friends on the weekend, mostly just Saturday. Before bed I try and drink water to help counteract the dehydrating effect. Of course this leads to MASSIVE pissing while trying to sleep. Many trips to the bathroom while trying to sleep. There is no answer for doing/eating/drinking anything bad for you, but people will always have/do something they want to do that is bad for them. I personally REALLY like the taste of a real good beer, and the social aspect of getting a buzz with friends while watching a movie, playing a video game, watching a movie, etc etc. I suppose if I grew up "normal" and had no aspirations for law enforcement/government jobs/security jobs, I'd be way more into hallucinogenic drugs. I could see how i'd much rather sit around and trip on mushrooms/mescaline than drinking. Drinking is generally bad for you eve, but god damn BEER IS GOOD!!!

Hell yeah, I love to drink.

Makes up for all the years that my friends got to smoke pot and I didn't!

I'll also add that in college I DEFINITELY went WAY CRAZY and did mushrooms and Ecstacy (don't recommend that, it dehydrates the hell outta you!)

But I too have mild CF so that may be why I got away with so much <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Have a drink. Relax. Enjoy life. Just because we have CF doesn't mean we have to miss out on the better things!

I like to counterbalance my drinking with a ton of excercise (not at the same time, mind you!)

Also now that I'm 28 my body doesn't put up with as much as it used too...ie hangovers at work are the WORST. But my non CF friends seem to have the same experience...I attribute it to getting old.

It's okay to drink with cf. Here's what I do to make sure that I'm not going to suffer any horrible consequences healthwise. First I drink in moderation and not too frequently. I will not drink in less I've taken my meds all day and I am not having an exacerbation of anything. I also must have done all cpt sessions prior to drinking for that day. I also make sure that I've been well hydrated all day (I've had at least 6 to 8 glasses of water) and that I have eaten all three meals. I also tend to have a glass of water before a drink to help counteract whatever drying effect the alcohol causes. I will not drink unless I've done those things or else I tend to follow it up with a raging sinus infection and/or respiratory infection. You have to figure out how your body reacts to alcohol and be careful when you do it. My one reminder is that you have a designated driver if you've never had alcohol before or anytime you are going to consume an amount that could impair your judgment. You are much more likely to be hurt severely as a result of drinking and driving than as a result of drinking (unless of course you have sulfite allergies).
