hiya guys i was recently told that people with CF can hold there alchol better due to all the medication we take and that our livers can take it . it kinda explains why i can drink all my friends under the table LOL

Yeah, I think it is probably true, but of course, excessive drinking is probably NOT a good idea for our already over burdened livers.

Whenever I drink, even if it's A LOT, i get buzzed, but I never get nausea, headaches, hangovers, etc.

Drinking lots of water while consuming alchohol is a good idea.

I never thought about that. I can out-drink at least most of the girls I know. I hold my liquor better than most (boys included), and I always seem to sober up faster. I haven't gotten sick from drinking in years. That is, except for once, but when I started drinking that night, I knew I was going to get sick. I went in knowing I was going to drink and drink until I was bombed -- and then drink some more. Heh.

I am unlike you guys, in my younger days I could throw them down. At 29 and married I average 3-4 beers a month and have become a very cheap drunk!

Not a drinker. Just isn't my thing. My brother on the other hand is a recovering alcoholic and that's another reason why I stay away from the stuff. He has dmaged his lliver considerably and also was going into kidney failure so now they have to keep a real close eye on that too.

yea...um I'm not so sure about this topic. Everytime I have gotten into a convo with my mom about drinking, she always says, "you know, that's not good for you, especially with your CF." And my mom has never been one of those moms that babied me about my CF, I've always been basically on my own with it, and to hear her say something about that kinda makes it stick in my head whenever I drink. But I never really looked into it. I do tend to need a lot to get drunk though...but I thought it was from developing an "immunity level" to it lol, or w/e people call it. I went from the "2 beer queer" to "I need more than 6 if I'm gonna start feeling this"...

Interesting topic. Back in "the day", my friends did comment on how I could hold my liquor and the only thing that caused me to get sick was wine coolers. Everything else, I was fine the next day unless I really tied one on w/ shots, etc.
That's interesting to know that a lot of us have that in common. Like someone mentioned....not a good idea w/ the stress already put on our liver from meds. But, try telling that to a college aged kid

I can drink alot more than most girls my size, but I've definitely had my share of rough nights. Does anyone notice that they cough alot more the next day after they drink?

actually i dont know where you got the "our livers can take it"from, because when i was 19 i got cirrhosis of the liver, and at first i went to the nearest little quack hospital er and they swore i must have been some big teenage alcoholic to get it at 19, since they knew nothing at all about cf they kept me there 3 weeks basically letting me die before they finally transferred me to st.louis barnes hospital and the cf docs there said cystic fibrosis causes cirrhosis of the liver in a small percent of patients. i've also read about it a few places since.

A percentage of Cf patients do develp cirrhosis. I had it mildly when I was about 10. The bile in our liver ducts is thicker (like in everywhere else) so there is blockage and scarring. Excessive drinking is not good for us as anybody else, but I have never been told that there is any specific reason that Cfers shouldn't do it. I would only say lay off the booze a bit if your antibiotics call for it. It is a good idea to have your liver functions checked at least once a year if you drink, just in case.

I do cough more the next day and it is also harder to bring the junk up. Alchohol dehydrates the body and the mucous gets thicker so it is harder to bring up.

When I was in my partying stage, I could drink alot of em under the table too. I dont drink hardly at all anymore.. Like maybe a half a wine cooler for a special occasion. That is kinda a neat thing tho........

My doctors used to say i am never allowed to drink alchol when i was 13 but when i asked them at 17 they said yeah it will be fine so since i got the go ahead i have been out drinkin every coupler of months i havent had any problems at all and bin told my liver and kidneys are in very good shape and look normal but i also am very good at ignoring my illness when i am out drinkin and just for once like to pretend i dont have it until the next day when i am coughin loads

I never got wasted everyday but i did go out to bars a lot lets say about last year and a little the year before. I could easily drink some of my friends under the table (except like the hard core alcoholics) and I've never had a hangover in my life.. and well I've been pretty wasted once or twice.
