Drop in pft

Hi, I had my doctor appointment yesterday, and my pfts had dropped from 84 to 75. I couldn't believe it, as I felt fine. But I have been on oral antibiotics on and off since November, and have had relatively "small" colds, not the flu, as many people around me. So I suppose that is what has caused the drop. My doctor said not to worry, as the above mentioned was the reason, and that he was sure that at the next visit my pft will increase again up to my baseline. But if not, then we can start to worry.

Has anyone had such a decrease in their pfts? Was was the reason and did it increase again?

When my husband had a big drop like that. They put in the hospital that night and he was there for 3 weeks and was on home IVs for another 3 weeks. It took him over a year to build his pft's back up. He had bacterial infection. He had two or three, I can't remember all the names but I think one was staph. He hasn't been back in the hospital for almost 2 years *knock on wood* and doing better slowly ever since. I don't know about your hospital/clinic but here if your pft's drop by 10% you are admitted well at least in most cases. I think you should check to see if you are culturing anything, get blood work done, and I also remember you having shoulder pain which I recommend getting x-rayed. I feel like your doctors should be looking out for you more and not just suggesting that could possibly be why you had a drop. 10% is a lot and they should be checking it out.

Thanks for your answer. I mentioned the back pain/cramp and my doctor said it sounded like muscle pain, he listend to my lungs and said they sounded good. It makes sense after this winter that my body is affected...

You cant just look at the numbers if your feeling ok then you probably are. But sometimes a drop in a PFT even when feeling fine could be due to the start of some kind of infection or inflamation process. Kinda like a warning. A drop can also be due to the calibration of the machine... Who knows? It could be the medicine making it a bit lower, the weather, infection, calibration of machine, or just a bad day for PFT's. As long as you keep an eye of any symptoms and so does your doctors then if it was to be something you would catch it early. And you're welcome gunelle, I know I may not be that informative since I don't have CF myself but I am going based on my hubby's experiences. Hopefully you still find my advice helpful. And I wish you lots of luck. Keep your spirits up and I am sure you will see those PFT's go back up. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> If nothing else it gives you more determination.

Hospitals are great places to pick up really bad bacteria. My team and I avoid hospitalizations, unless I feel I'm just too sick or weak to stay at home. It's only happened twice in 29 years, and I was only in for 3 days.

Well they are very VERY careful at his hospital. They limit visits and amount of people that can be in the room and floor. You can't come if you are sick even just a little. He gets a private room and the nurses must always wash in front of the patient and wear gloves and mask. I mean hospitals are never truly safe (I have seen that first hand myself) but I think they do take precautions as much as possible here. Not to mention he dropped 30% of his lung function so he didn't really have a choice that time. They pretty much rushed him. This is the one and only time he has been admitted in his life. Never needed to otherwise so far. *knock on wood* Thanks for the heads up though. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
