dumb question
It's not a dumb question.

Throat cultures will also sometimes only turn up 'normal flora' since they generally contain no sputum from deep in the lungs; if they got a sample from deeper in the lung sometimes more would turn up. It's not uncommon for quite some time to go by and at least some of the cultures to show 'normal' results, and maybe staph or h.flu to be the only other findings. There are several bugs that only require treatment when they are sick, and things like the tube infection wouldn't cause changes on the sputum culture.

<begin quote>My daughter is 3 and has only natural flora so far.

I guess it will change when we start preschool

Also, I was told - not many healthy people have only natural flora so its not suprising that our kids usually culture something. The question is what and does it go into lungs I guess....</end quote>

Things won't necessarily change upon starting school. Yes, our kids will likely get sick with more viruses, etc, but they do not 'catch' cf bugs from the general population- they are already exposed to bugs like PA, staph and many others in the water, soil, other surfaces and some even in the air on a daily basis and healthy people don't have resp systems hospitable to being colonized with cf-specific ones like PA. So people that kids with CF are exposed to in the general population aren't the threat when it comes to being colonized- others with CF or compromised immune systems can present a problem, but not typical kids.
</end quote>

well, viruses weaken the respiratory system's defenses so getting them more often MIGHT put ppl with CF at a higher risk of culturing CF bugs, b/c their respiratory system is more vulnerable during the time of illness. I agree though that ppl kids are exposed to in school are not a threat and just being in contact with them should not change anything

In our case, which is always weird, Owen has not gotten any more sick since starting school than he did before. Might not mean anything though. Right now, he is coughing a lot and we have been nebbing every four hours for a week. I am sure it's viral (we have all had something of a cough in the last month). But, for Owen, it seems more about weight and strength in general.

I worry too. mine has not started pre school yet, we will try next year, but has been catching every bug around this year. After having back to back colds for a month, end up with PA ;-(. Weirdly she was very "bug resistant" until 2 y/o.

That is true, getting run down due to constant illness won't help. I hadn't thought of that as an indirect contributing factor potentially resulting in culturing something nasty. In Emily's case, constant bugs result in frequent exacerbations of what she already is colonized with (staph) but she's had that since her dx, even showing in cultures taken right after long courses of high-dose abx, which is rather frustrating. I never even considered frequent illness leading to culturing something new, although it should have: frequent illness IS what causes lung damage which IS what creates the more hospitable environment for CF bugs to set up shop. Blahhhhh.

Owen's Mom: it's not surprising that Owen's threshold for illness is tied to his weight. Nutritional status is directly associated with our children's pulmonary health when you look at cf registry data, so the better nourished they are and the better BMI they can achieve, in many cases the healthier they will be.
