Eventually, yes. But not always. My daughter used to get cultures of "normal flora" but now always has Staph A.

My daughter is 3 and has only natural flora so far.
I guess it will change when we start preschool <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
Also, I was told - not many healthy people have only natural flora so its not suprising that our kids usually culture something. The question is what and does it go into lungs I guess....

Thanks for the responses. I was just wondering because Owen's throat culture was "natural flora." He is currently on Cephalixin for a g-tube infection, I wondered if that would affect the test. And, to confess, I think I was also secretly hoping it would mean it isn't CF. I know that is dumb and I hate to sound insulting to those who know they have it. My mind has just gone to every place imaginable in the last two years. I will have to learn how to change that pattern.
For, now, I will just learn to focus on how well he is currently doing, not what we call it.

It's not a dumb question. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Throat cultures will also sometimes only turn up 'normal flora' since they generally contain no sputum from deep in the lungs; if they got a sample from deeper in the lung sometimes more would turn up. It's not uncommon for quite some time to go by and at least some of the cultures to show 'normal' results, and maybe staph or h.flu to be the only other findings. There are several bugs that only require treatment when they are sick, and things like the tube infection wouldn't cause changes on the sputum culture.

Things won't necessarily change upon starting school. Yes, our kids will likely get sick with more viruses, etc, but they do not 'catch' cf bugs from the general population- they are already exposed to bugs like PA, staph and many others in the water, soil, other surfaces and some even in the air on a daily basis and healthy people don't have resp systems hospitable to being colonized with cf-specific ones like PA. So people that kids with CF are exposed to in the general population aren't the threat when it comes to being colonized- others with CF or compromised immune systems can present a problem, but not typical kids.

And yes- I feel there is a difference in whether or not the positive cultures involve the lungs~ Many people in the general population are colonized with staph, but there is a difference between a positive asymptomatic nasal swab (as often seen in healthcare workers) and lower-respiratory colonization that leads to repeated pulmonary exacerbations (as often seen in those with CF). Both might be 'positive' but one is more meaningful than the other.

hmw - I agree - but I guess that's mine main worry now - what Asia will catch and if... when starting school.... certainlt she will get sick more often - flu and so on and this means antibiotics and so on... so I worry ....
but you're rigth <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

well, viruses weaken the respiratory system's defenses so getting them more often MIGHT put ppl with CF at a higher risk of culturing CF bugs, b/c their respiratory system is more vulnerable during the time of illness. I agree though that ppl kids are exposed to in school are not a threat and just being in contact with them should not change anything
