E. Coli

Hey there,

I was at the clinic today for a follow up, I've been on IV for 2 weeks now and haven't gotten any better. The doctor said that she was puzzled because my sputum culture came back with E. Coli. She ran another culture to make sure that it was true so I'm waiting on those results.

She said it wasn't a common bug to have, so I was just looking to see if anyone else cultures it and what your experience has been.

Thanks so much for your help!

Are you on a med for reflux? You can have reflux, and not be aware of it. It's usually worse when you lay down, and you can aspirate into your lungs while you sleep.

I cultured it once. My doctor wasn't too worried about it, saying it might show up from time to time but was unlikely to colonize. Sure enough, that was several years ago, and I haven't seen it again.

BTW, I also cultured my typical PA and MRSA, so they treated me for those with the usual meds, and they seemed to get the E. Coli as well. However, the doctor did warn me in advance that those meds wouldn't target the E. Coli, so it might have to be treated after the others. It sounds like maybe they'll have to give you something else for it.

My daughter has cultured e. coli in her sinuses a few times. Most noteably, when she had a sinus clean-out, her first one, last summer, her sinuses were packed with mucus, and it grew out e.coli in LARGE amounts (or whatever the proper way to say it is...there were high counts, I guess).

At the time, the ENT (not part of our CF clinic) put her on an oral antibiotic. I can't remember what it was. It didn't seem to help that much, and we ran the gamut of oral abx for 6 months. She was back in for an Endo/bronch in December, and e. coli was found again in the sinuses not the lungs, but not as virulent this time.

Finally the CF team and ENT (who got together after the procedure to put thier heads together, I guess) connected the dots and put Emily back on Prevacid. SHe hadn't been on it since she was a baby.

Now she takes it nightly, and it really has seemed to help. She's only had one sinus culture since then and there was no e.coli. Also, the frequency of infections/congestion/ cough due to nasal drainage is much decreased since the antacid was re-introduced. I have to conclude that the e.coli was responsible for much of the trouble she'd been having.

My daughter has cultured it several times before, but only caused her problems once. She had an increasing cough so we treated it with two weeks of Augmentin. It cleared it right up.

I never thought though of the reflux potenially causing the ecoli growth, very interesting. I thought it might be related to the fact that she is a toddler and they aren't so cleanly at times. lol
