Earthquake in New Zealand

Latest update...the rescuers have found this morning about a 100 people that have been rescued from the rubble. And some of the international rescue aid has landed in Christchurch. People are lining up to put petrol in their cars to get out of town. Also there were a dozen after shocks after the big one yesterday. But help is on it's way. Please keep praying. Christchurch needs all the prayers they can get.

The number of people who have died are about 38 but the number is expected to rise a lot more as they search for more injured people.

We have police force in New south wales coming in and aid from Taiwan and Australia.

Thousand of people have been in shelters last night too. What is Kiwilady's name? Please inbox me if you know so I can keep a look out for her.

Hey Terri, thanks for your enquiry I live on the other side of the Alps on the West Coast, Christchurch is on the East Coast. [a little geography lesson] I travel to CHCH constantly, 2and1/2hrs drive [across the main divide] from my home here at Lake Brunner.

I have family and some friends living in Christchurch, who I have spoken to, they are thankfully ok, they have been badly shaken after the horrific earthquake yesterday. I am still waiting to hear from other friends to see if they are safe. Some, I know have had their houses and work places trashed. We are hoping and praying that there will be no major after-shocks to prevent or stall the rescue process.

Thank God for international assistance from far and wide. Teams of rescuers who have elite experience in different aspects of natural disasters are indeed an asset.

The whole picture is still to evolve really, sadly the death rate is rising. Going by what I have seen on the tv, it has been a truly devastating event. Not only the tragedy of lost lives, some truly beautiful historic buildings have tumbled down too. Yes, I know buildings are just buildings, but people are irreplaceable.

Most of the media coverage has focused solely on the central city area, however I have spoken to family in the suburbs, who are still without power and water, their streets are awash with liquefaction, [solid ground that has turned to mush]. On saying this I realise the rescue teams need to first help those whom they know are trapped in the rubble.

I am due to travel to CHCH on Monday for my 3mthly Chest Specialist appt. I may well have to reconsider my plans!

Where abouts do you live Shine? You have given a good account of the last 24hrs. I have been following tv1 since yesterday. I thought John Key delivered a powerful speech to the nation.

Hi Marie, I haven't come across any Swedish Doctors at the Christchurch Respiratory Clinic.

Thanks again Terri for checking up on me! There are people who are in peril, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Lives and a city have to be rebuilt.

Cheers

Also my husband and I are flying down to Dunedin which is kinda close to the earthquake...and I'm a little freaked about going, as I have heard that they felt the quake as well...but it's probably me just being overly worried about it lol

We had planned this ages ago for our 5th wedding anniversary and as a holiday too, so to late to change plans now lol
