EFlow Advice...

As many know, Pulmozyme can clog the Eflow, and make it work slower and less effective. My solution was to have 2 heads and use one for pulmo and the other for albuterol and tobi. The result is a very slow moving pumlo, but the albuterol and tobi are fast and effective.

The way I got 2 heads was by calling Foundation Care and telling them that one head was clogged to hell and they sent me another one. They didn't ask for the original back--and even if they asked for it back, I would've been "slow" to respond.

In England you can obtain a device from the makers of the e-flow which cleans the head for you when its blocked so I would assume it exists elsewhere. You basically fill it with sodium chloride or water, put the head in and plug it into the e-flow and it shoved this through the opposite way to open the tiny holes in the head.

I had the eFlow back in 2007. I was doing it all in it and no one at that time had figured out what was clogging it... I was pissed and I think in the summer of 2008 I switched back to a regular compressor. For me though the eFlow as quiet, b/c it was clogged ran about the same time as a regular compressor. I got new heads more than once every 3 months (or so it was the policy back then)... I never had to send my used heads back, though I did when I sent my machine in two times b/c of it not working right. I just hated b/c after like 1 week the head would be clogged...so worthless at the time for me... the cleanup was harder and more strict than regular nebs for me in that you had to clean it immediately after use.

Now that I think about it, using it like that probably was like not even doing a treatment either without the right flow and stuff.

I remember my doctor telling me about the company working on the device to rinse through the head the other way... at the time it was developed but my doctor didnt know how to get ahold of them... I think it wasnt patented or something yet.

I had a strong dislike for the eFlow, but want to try it again especially since I heard that the pulmozyme seems to be the clogging culprit.

Interesting. I have the Altera for Cayston...they sent me 2 nebs and 2 heads. Do you have reformulated pulmozyme that you use in the eflow/altera, or just your regular pulmozyme?

My doc said ONLY use Cayston in it, but it would be such a time saver to use my other meds in it also...although I'm sure hypersal would REALLY clog it <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

FYI pulmozyme is VERY effective for me I can tell when I do and when I dont take it, even on days I accidentally forget it, normally a weekend I can tell because I dont get my 'floaters' in my throat a few hours later.

I did a trial of pulmozyme in altera for a week because I read here about others doing it and I found it VERY ineffective. I thought maybe it was just coincidence but I started it back on my mobilaire and it went back to being effective.

Debra,

You can ask your doctor or pharmacy to give you a prescription for the TRIO, which is the general purpose eflow device. I'm pretty sure you can obtain one with a prescription for either Tobi or Colistin, if you're doing either of those on the off month. The Altera is specifically formulated for the particle size of Cayston, and using other medications in it could clog the device and yield a different medication dose than the one that is prescribed.
