Lou Lou my doctor said that the heads and electronic devices were set at different sizes and rates specifically formatted for the Cayston aka altera...

I was just told by my eFlow/Altera pharmacy that the heads holes were punched differently and specifically for each medication they are made for. So it's likely that a different amount of medication would be inhaled if you used the incorrect head. Just what I was told, that it's a big no-no to use different heads.

to use tobra through the trio, it has to be compounded for it and you need a script that specifically states that (so you can't actually use the brand Tobi). My insurance is really picky about where I get my meds (they like me to use their pharmacy) and I thought for sure they would deny it but they didn't.

I was just at a conference with Foundation Care Pharmacy and I brought up the fact the Alterra and TRIO look exactly the same, the heads do! And the only difference is the electronic disc part on the Alterra. They said it is the holes in the metal head that are different than the holes in the TRIO metal head. He also said to ONLY USE Cayston in the Altera. You can use the TRIO for reformulated Tobra, Colistin, ALbuterol and HTS and Pulmo.

I use the TRIO for albuterol and Colistin. Then the Pari LC PLus for the HTS and Pulmozyme since those two drugs seemed to clog my metal head too much. Then I will use Altera for Cayston. I commented about how it sucks to have all these different nebulizers and he said the future beholds more drugs which is great but with their own different nebs.

UGH.....

I think this is all a bunch of BS pumped out by big pharmaceuticals. Why you say? So the darn thing won't get clogged up and keep their medicine from being delivered. They're using a scare tactic to frighten people but even that I don't think ships with the product anymore from what I'm hearing. The previous instruction manual was over the top in trying to frighten people that if they used the nebulizer for any other medicine injury or death could result. It was mentioned on every page and resulted in a lot of people being very skeptical (I believe). Keep in mind my spouse works for a pharma and I am in no way anti pharma's. I'm just saying...give us some numbers on these "different holes" also I'd like to see a study about how the Trio and Altera are different. From what I hear behind closed doors the reps admit that there isn't anything different about the machine, heads, nuttin' <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0">

I tend to agree with LouLou, I don't think they are any different. I believe some of the issue could have been with getting approval from the FDA. They needed to try to eliminate things that may effect the delivery of the medication, to match what was done in the cayston trials. So they made the altera cosmetically different and for use only with Cayston. It also works out well for the two companies as they get sell more eflow units. In the price you pay for Cayston each month is included a new neb kit with head. Its not for our convenience, they are making money off including the new neb kit each month. With the Trio I get free with my Tobra prescription, I need to go 4 months before they send another one, and this gets much more use with 4 different meds per day.

I sooooo agree with this whole Altera Vs TRIO it makes me LIVID! I feel like the makers are just trying to get more money! I mean okay if and that is a big if the holes are different on the metal heads then why can we not AT LEAST use the same blue controller! I asked that to the pharm and they said no. How much easier would it be to use different nebs but same controller OR even easier to switch out the metal heads. Cause the plastic pieces for the TRIO and Alterra look exactly the same to me as does the metal heads but granted I can not see the holes on the heads. UGH. I also do not like the fact that the TRIO makes me wait too for 3 months before a new head! I mean my TRIO head lasts maybe a week or so doing well and then it is up to 10-13 minutes to do Albuterol and Colistin. Which granted is still better than in the Pari LC Plus but when I know what the TRIO CAN do when working properly it makes me mad! I only do Albuterol and Colistin in the TRIO cause HTS and Pulmozyme clogged the head even worse. And I am SUPER diligent about cleaning the head and disinfectin properly but still the TRIO head is not that good after a week or so. Wish, Wish I can get a new head with each order of Colistin!!!!

I am so with you all that is all comes down to money! Profits are greater for producing the Alterra. I mean a new neb for each drug that comes out! TOTAL pain now I am using the TRIO, ALterra and Pari LC Plus with compressor. I mean my room I use to do meds looks like a surgical room. Plus to clean the metal heads I gotta use Distilled water for the TRIO and regular water for the Alterra. Oh jeez.

On the bright side I am glad there are drugs for us and more in the pipeline and so far so good for me on Cayston although it has only been one day, ha ha!

But I feel all your pain!
