Elevated Liver Enzymes

Our pulm nurse called a few weeks ago & told us that Erin's liver enzymes were a little elevated & we would have watch it to make sure that it doesn't mean anything. She was on bactrim for an ear infection when her blood was drawn. I am a little worried, but going to wait until the next blood test to get too concerned. Has anyone else had a elevated liver enzyme test due to antibiotics?

Antibiotics are metabolized through the liver, for the most part. CF patients are on a ton of meds, so elevated liver enzymes doesn't surprise me.

Like your doc said, just keep an eye on it... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Katy's liver enzymes were a tad elevated on the first blood testing done by our CF doc (in August) and she had not been on any meds at all. I do know that they needed a 'base-line' measurement to compare to, and they were able to find one in her charts from her pediatrician. I don't know what the time frame was between the two.

She was put on Ursodiol. She is scheduled to have her liver enzymes re-tested in January. I'm assuming Ursodiol is just one of her life-long meds but I'm still learning.

When Ben was dx his liver enzymes were elevated. He was on Ursidol as well the first year. We took him off and retested after 3 months and they were fine. He has tested fine since then at his annual blood draw, so it is not always a sign of permanent liver issues. SOmething to watch, yes. My doctor said that temporary liver inflammation can cause these numbers to go higher (in our case due to being undiagnosed/malabsorption) and then once it has had a chance to heal it evens out.

DS is also on Actigal/Urisidol. Believe it can also help prevent gall stones. He's been on it since he was a week or so old. I think his levels were elevated because he was on TPN for a week or so after his bowel obstruction surgery.

Our doctor did mention a Factor 2 test that can be done as a first indication of severe liver problems, but right now, he just get normal blood work done each year -- vitamin levels, cultures, other liver type tests...

OMGosh Jody you just made my day........<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I've been SO worried about the liver issue. It's nice to know that it could be somewhat temporary. I won't get too excited but again it is nice to hear that possibility. As I said I'm still learning.

Sorry to hijack your thread Karon.

Elevated liver enzymes are so common in CFers. DH has elevated liver enzymes on numerous occasions throughout the year, gets them tested every few months just to watch and keep an eye on it.
