Embolization & Port-a-cath

Hi,
I am going into the hospital at the end of January to have 2 procedures done.
The embolization of the blood vessels that are bleeding in my lungs and i am having a Port put in.
My doctor says that the embolization can cause paralysis, which obviously makes me nervous!
Then I have had someone tell me that ports can break... Also scary...
Anyone have either of these done and can give me some feedback?!

lots of people on here have ports. i LOVE mine. as with any medical "accessories" (haha) things can go wrong but with proper care these risks are minimized.

do a search for "ports" on the left side of the screen and a lot of discussions should come up with tons of helpful info! probably the same with embolizations. i've never had one of those so i can't help you with that....good luck though!

Awesome. Thanks... Yeah the port seems like a breeze but how often do you get yours flushed? I have had a blood clot so i am scared it's going to clot off easily!

Also, how did you get your picture on your signature!

when i'm not using my port for IVs it gets flushed once a month which i do myself. The first couple of times i had my clinic do it because i wasn't ready to try and do it myself but then i decided that it was just WAY more convenient for me to do it so i sucked it up and did it myself and its not bad at all. honestly, the first couple times it hurt some but now its built up scar tissue and now i don't really feel it.

When you flush the port you flush it with saline and then heparin (blood thinner) which is supposed to keep the line from clotting off. of course there is always the risk that it will clot anyway but they have some tricks to try and dissolve the clot if that happens (can't remember what they are though off the top of my head sorry!). good luck! its really not bad in my opinion and the convenience it worth it (i think)!
