Do you know which type of Vest you are getting?

We are having trouble choosing between the Respitech Incourage and the Hill Rom so we are doing a 30 day trial of each. The Respitech Incorage vest arrived yesterday and now we need to be trained on how to use it.

She did not seem to mind either vest when she tried them on at the CF clinic, but I will let you know how it goes at home.

Ratatosk & Melissa- thank you for describing the noise for me. This is exactly the kind of thing I need to know, especially since when I found the HilRom site when doing a search they claim that theirs is quiet! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0"> Emily loves her Gameboy and it can be played with headphones. I limit her use of it already- maybe I can get some noise-blocking headphones for her and let her play only during treatments.

Becca'smom- I am so glad to see that you had no trouble at all with insurance covering the vest- as well as the fact that Becca doesn't mind hers! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Marla- I am going to be getting a call from the clinic's social worker today or tomorrow and I will ask her which one. When having me sign off on the insurance forms, the pulmonary dr. mentioned 'filling out the paperwork for the manufacturer we work with now for the vests' and I didn't even think to ask! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0"> Like you, though, Emily will be getting a 30 day trial to see how she does with it. Is their a difference in noise level between the 2? What factors are making it hard to choose? I'll let you know as well how Emily does and I appreciate you letting me know how things go with Emma. (I love the name! Emily was almost an Emma. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> )

I can't believe the fits of coughing she goes into now when using the Acapella- when she is healthy! I've had no idea how much junk she had in her lungs all this time. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> (we are new to this whole thing.) I wonder how much more this will do.

A bit off-topic for this thread but related to her lung function- They love how active she already is and say this will help keep her lung function up. She is a dancer- does a weekly 90 min class (ballet, tap, jazz.) Jazz really keeps her moving fast the whole class- it's so physical. I am considering adding a midweek class of just jazz for her next yr; it's a perfect temperature-controlled environment to be very active and she LOVES it. She also has two big brothers she constantly wants to keep up with (and that will wear out any kid!)

Emily will be getting a vest... what to expect?

we got a vest for our son when he was right around 6 months old - I think he fell asleep the first time he used it, and he continues to fall asleep a lot during the treatment - he must find it relaxing! It is a bit loud, but I just crank up the TV and we watch cartoons during therapy. It wasn't until we started the vest and pulmozyme did we kick pseudomonas to the curb (at least for now!)

As for insurance, we had to pay 20% of the cost, but it was 20% of the contracted amount, which wound up being closer to $10,000, so we owed around $2000. I'm still paying for it, monthly, around $200 a month for a year. I figure it's a lifetime investment, so, in the long run, it'll pay off. We are using Respirtech, BTW.

I hope that your DD gets used to it and it helps you all out!

I got a call from HillRom; they took a bunch of info about Emily to put together a letter of medical necessity & someone from our state's supplier of them will be coming out this week to bring the vest and teach us how to use it. Info has already been submitted to insurance by the pulmonary dr. but I guess this letter is something more that is done to help get approval pushed through. I hope it works. I was very happy to find out that once approval goes through it's a 'lifetime' deal and they switch out vests as she outgrows them, etc. I hadn't realized that.

I hope things go well.

I'm glad Nolan does well w/ his. And you are right; given what you are paying for and how long it will be used, the investment is well worth it...
