ending breastfeeding

Because I want to join a drug study, I'm going to quit breastfeeding. I'd love any hints about how to get baby to switch from breast milk to formula, best kinds of formulas for babies used to nursing, and how to make me the least sore or what to do that way. Thanks for your help!

Jeanna, I quit breastfeeding for the exact same reason. The difference was though that my son was 1 yr old and it was when I had planned to quit anyway. For the first 5 mo he had exclusively breastmilk (during the day while I was gone at work the nanny fed him my pumped milk). At 5 months we started diluting the breastmilk by 50% formula in the daytime bottles. He also started babyfood around this time. We continued on with breastfeeding in the am and pm (whenever I was home), 50/50 during the day and baby foods until 12 months when I went away for a 3 day weekend for the study kickoff. When I got back there was no more boobies just 50/50 until we used up the breastmilk then just formula.

He did just fine with it but I have to admit I missed the closeness when I returned but I knew I couldn't offer the breast to him because I was on the drug trial and had no idea what the effects of this drug could be on my son. Also I had given my word that I was done with breastfeeding. I think having the hard stop of the start of the drug study actually made stopping easier. Good luck!

Best wishes!

I have been nursing my daughter for 18 months now. I really want to go until she is 2 years old, but I am now stuck in the hospital for 3 weeks and I may be forced to wean her.

I agree with the previous poster if you can do 50/50 great. Some babies take to formula just fine right away. Good Start making the best kind.

I don't have any tips on weaning him but *in my opinion only* that you should at least bf him a few more months especially if all is going well. I know we all have our own priorities as to what comes first but I wouldn't wean for a drug study, especially before baby is 6 months old. My clinic wants me to participate in an inhaled cipro study but they know I won't wean to do it so they're going to find out if bfing is allowed.

I guess I look at it as though my kids come first and if I don't participate they can easily find someone else to. Either way they are going to get their data. I have participated in studies in the past so I'm all for helping out (and making $ along the way) but not at the expense of my kids.

Good luck w/ everything!!

And to Jessica - way to go to 18 months!! Your DD may pick up where she left off after... or she may not. Do you have access to her once in a while? If so, offer to nurse her when you see her.
