ending breastfeeding

There are no formulas for breastfed babies, it's basically the difference between drinking sweet warm milk and protein powder drink. Amelia was weaned to cows milk at a year because she didn't like formula. Some babies will take a bottle of formula easily and some will spit it out and refuse to eat.

Thanks for all of your replies. I really do not want to quit breastfeeding Alex, not only for him, but because I really love our special closeness. However, I think I gave him a very good start and that prolonging my life will ultimately be more important to him. I am trying to make the best decision that I can as his mother. I thank God that he gave me such a precious gift.

You can get samples from your pediatrician. I used Similac when Amelia had jaundice as a newborn and she did fine on it. Store brands are much more economical in the long run though. Costco sells huge canisters of it and stores like Walmart and Target have their own brand. You can also order free samples and coupon checks online. I think with an older baby you can use different brands without as much risk of causing intestinal upset but I'd start with one and stick to it if it works just in case. The generics often say "like Similac" or "compare to Enfamil".

A very good sippy cup for a breastfed baby is the Nuby 7 oz BPA free cup with handles. It comes with a bottle nipple and a sippy spout. Amelia did great with the sippy spout even at 6 months of age though she'd not take a regular bottle nipple. I bought them at Buy Buy Baby.

You can mix breast milk with formula at first and then gradually decrease the amount of milk added until it is pure formula. The unfortunate thing about doing that is that you have to throw out the leftovers since formula can't be consumed again at the next feeding like breast milk. If he'll take straight formula then it might be easier to just start dropping breast feeds and adding bottle feeds. If you drop a feed every 2 days or so you shouldn't get very engorged. HTH.
