enzyme dosage

I am confused on the whole matter of the enzyme thing. Is there dosage on weight and age or is it dependent on pancreatic insufficiency; fat intake?

Brandon is 2 month, 12.12pounds and is currently prescribed creon 10

when talking to the dr. and pharmacist they say its an age weight thing, but from reading other post and and things online I have not seen anything that states its an age weight thing specifically. and what I did find is he is not taking the max amount for his age so why are they not letting him get them upped when they state he needs them upped?

Is this something I need to to figure out on my own or is it something I should stick to their direct reccomendation.

I think you should definitely stick with the docs recommendation.

I know that when we are at clinic or are talking with the docs about upping enzymes, they have a way of figuring out the MAX dosage based on weight, that is safe for DS to have per day.

Not sure why they wouldn't up the enzymes if he needs it and is not on the max dosage - something you need to bring up with the docs if he's not gaining weight. (12.12 lbs seems pretty good to me at 2 months?)

its not really the weight that is the issue but he doesn't quit he will eat every 2 hours to try and fulfill himself and and he was doing fine but then put on 3 pounds buy his last appt. and now has totaled 4 pounds so now he is not holding in as much and his bm's are like they were before he was on enzymes and he is either very gassy and its flying out his rear or he is extremely constipated and bloated..

I guess its just a hard thing and he will have to be miserable in between dose changes, they said that he is in between dosage last visit and I feel like they find me incompetent to measure out the proper dose so they will just wait. They did this at the clinic when they demoed how to use the neb. and they only had a dose that was double what they wanted and the resp. tech was going to give it to me and then nurse stopped him and said right in front of me that "we wouldn't want them to get confused and that is double the dose they need so lets make sure we don't send that with them" and of coarse it took a day for my pharmacist to get it in.

I wish there was a scientific formula based on weight and age, but for us it was always based on what he was going to eat and this was the child who sometimes drank 2 ounces of formula, never more than 5 ounces...

The enzyme issue always drove me nuts. We were given an initial dosage -- so many capsules per bottle and to adjust it ourselves based on output (poo). At which time we'd gradually increase by half a capsule. In fact we still do this. Sometimes he gets two enzymes for a snack, sometimes it's a more like a meal, so he gets more.
If I notice he's helped himself to a snack, but only has a couple of bites, he'll maybe just get one enzyme.

IMO, talk to your doctor if your child has issues with loose stools, slowing down on growth, stomach discomfort....
