Enzyme Question?????

I'm not too worried about the intestinal blockages, as I always eat the recommended daily amount of fiber, which aids in keeping things normal. But right when I hear the word "blockage" it throws off an alarm in my head because as a kid I got blockages literally every year, and I never want another surgery again, after watching that movie, "Awake" where a patient is aware of the whole surgery but literally paralyzed and unable to move, and I have a fear that while I'm under anesthesia, the docs will dress me in women's clothes and take pics.

But currently, I take 1 enzyme of Creon 20 per 5 grams of fat which can add up to 15 enzymes if I eat a real fatty entrée. I just wanted a reassuring voice telling me that I'm not damaging my insides by taking this exuberant amount.

I'd speak to your dietitian if you have one. I would venture that you are not doing much damage with a dose like you described, but then again I'm not a doc. You might try an enzyme that has less amylase and protease. It seems that most of the stronger enzymes have 20,000 units of lipase and the amylase and protease differ. Creon 20 has quite a bit of amylase and protease (66,400U and 75,000U respectively). Like someone else said earlier you could use a different enzyme when eating something high in fat. Another option would be to avoid very fatty foods altogether.

Having said that, I personally have found that taking too many enzymes is far better than underestimating. I'll also add that underestimating can just as easily lead to a bowel obstruction. I average a partial obstruction about every 2-3 years and it's usually relieved by taking some Mag Citrate.

Good luck.

Monique takes 10 Creon 25000 per meal or less depending on what she's eating. We were told by the Solvay rep. that this is equal to the amount of enzyme a "normal" adult has.
