my dd is just now 3mo old and she is 9.8lbs. they have her at 2 pills of creon before each feed. they are still not happy with her weight gain and said instead of upping her meds yet again they want to try and antacid.

she explained that if she has too much acid in the stomach than her enzymes cant break down enough for the pancreas to absorb so shell be going on prevacid for 2 weeks to see if it helps

did any of you have to do this? did it really work? or did you just simply needs more enzymes?

my dd's fecal elastees was 15 so we know shes really insuficient.

My son (7) has been on prevacid for years.

Without it we have tons of issues with his enzymes. This is pretty normal, so this one you don't have to stress over.

Prevacid (or some acid reducer) seems to be a pretty normal course of action for CF kiddos. It helps the enzymes work better and I'd definitely try that first before upping her pills. I've also recently learned that different people need their enzymes at different timing for optimal performance -- some need to take them 10 minutes before eating the first bite (swallow of formula?) and others can do better waiting a few bites in. So maybe you could talk to your doctor about ways to switch this up as well.

My son is almost 4 months old and has been on Zantac since he was 2 months old. I have found that antacids do seem to be common in CFers so she may need it. My son is also in 2 creon before he eats and our dietician said that is a high dose for someone his size so I would try the antacids before cganging the enzymes any. We also just recently upped his dose of Zantac and I think it has helped.
