My 5 1/2 year old has been taking enzymes since he was dianosed at 6 months. He has always taken Cotazym, typically 4 with meals and 2 with snacks. We where initially told to take the enzymes at the beginning of the meal and then you had 1 hour to complete the meal. We have been doing it this way since day 1 with good success (weight and height above 75 percentile, soild poops, no stomache pain). We recently went to clinic and the new dietician informed us that we have been doing it wrong all this time. That each enzyme lasts 20 minutes, therefore you take 2 at the beginning of a meal, 1 more at the 20 minute mark and the last one at the 40 minute mark. To say we where shocked was an understatment! He has been on the new regimen for over 2 weeks, since then his poops have never looked right, and he has awoke twice in the middle of the night with severe stomache pain and diarehea. My question is, how do you give your kids their enzymes? Staggered, or all at once? I can't believe we have been doing it all wrong this whole time and still he has done as well as he has. Now we are supposedly doing it the "right way" and he is having problems????????
