Does anyone out there get prescribed to them (by your health care provider) exercise therapy or physical therapy for the sole purpose of maintaining healthy lungs/airway clearance?

My gym membership costs are deducted from our family's flexible spending account. My pulmonologist wrote a letter saying I needed to exercise for mucus clearance for bronchiectasis and chronic bronchitis. I submitted it to the company that manages our FSA and they approved it within two weeks.

I have to admit I was amazed--not that the logic is faulty but that they actually understood it.

I credit vigorous exercise 3x a week with a major reduction in my exacerbation rate. Even when I was on vacation out of town for two weeks, I found a gym and bought $12 day passes. I treat working out like medication, non-negotiable.

I was referred to Pulmonary Rehab, its a combo of exercise three days a week and education. So far the exercise is paying off I'd say.

Although I have been exercising all my life, over the past 6 months I have found that it's getting harder and harder. I mentioned this to my doctor and he refered me to pulmonary rehab. So far I think it has been helping a lot. I'm hopeful that eventually I'll be able to go back to exercising on my own;.
