I recently found out that Jelly Bellies - the gourmet jelly beans makes a jelly for runners that includes electrolytes. (Available through running stores.)

I live in Austin and have to deal with this about four months each year! For myself, I get out and exercise in the morning, before it gets too hot. Whenever I go on a long hike, I drink Gatorade - I didn't do this on a hike about 10 years ago and I got heat exhaustion.

For DD (who doesn't have CF) we go to a lot of sprinkler parks and pools, and we go to indoor gyms. We just spent a week at the beach and she loved it - I wish we lived closer to the ocean!

I can't wait for fall!

I always drink some Gatorade before I work out and afterwards. I don't like drinking it while I'm at the gym so instead I buy Smartwater (same people who make Vitamin Water). This water has some electrolytes infused in it so even if it doesn't have as much as Gatorade, it does have a little something to add. I'm also not a huge eater so I'm constantly nibbling on pretzels everyday.

Another thing that is good for keeping up electrolytes is unrefined sea salt. I started using this last summer and noticed a big difference almost immediately. I put it on all my food instead of regular salt, and if it's particularly hot or I'm feeling dehydrated or low on salt, I'll put some in water and drink it. Unrefined sea salt has all the electrolytes, not just sodium.

When I was younger my pedi CF doc told my mom to add a couple shakes of salt to a glass of juice. I drank gatorade, too, but never liked it enough to drink it all the time in the summer. Now I take salt tabs, which I would have loved as a kid because they are pretty yummy.

I've used salt tablets when exercising in this insane FL heat - they work ok. I drink a lot of gatorade, but I definitely prefer the smartwater when I can find it (too much sugar in G).

At the risk of sounding obvious, the problem with just giving water is the concern of "water intoxication" - I hadn't heard of such a thing until a few years ago when my mom was rushed to the hospital after she drank a ton of water due to heat exhaustion.

When the heat index is 115 no one should be playing outside for extensive time, cf or not. Even 15 mins isn't good. I was outside last friday-(i live in the nyc suburbs)-and after being outside for only 5 mins i had that inner gut 'i shouldn't be here' feeling.
Gatorade gatorade gatorade folks!
And be careful with salt shakers or tabs-you gotta drink alot of fluids to keep up with then. Salts important, but it also soaks up every drop of water in you so make up for it.
My cut off temp is about 95, depending on heat index. But even then I keep on top of fluids, basically I have a drink in hand all day.
But friday and saturday in the northeast-I wouldn't let my non cf daughter outside to play.
