Exercise as airway clearence..

DS rarely coughs. No cough is his baseline as well. So when he was a baby/toddler, if he coughed it meant he was coming down with something and needed abx.

<br />We do have him stop a few times during his vest treatments and cough. Something that he wasn't able to do when he was really teeny tiny. He tends to have more post-nasal drip coughs.

With the vest I find that you often have to force yourself to cough. However, when you are exersizing it is the bodies natual reaction to get rid of whatever is blocking the airways as quickly as possible so you can continue to breathe.

I find it helpful to do hypertonic saline while doing my vest so I get more stuff up. Otherwise, I could do my vest for the whole 30 minutes and not cough a bit.

It has always been my understanding that the VEST's purpose isn't to MAKE you cough, but to loosen the junk so that when you DO cough, it will come out. What I have found to have the best results (for me) is to follow the VEST up with some sort of physical activity to get me coughing.

As far as running- it makes a noticeable difference in my lungs, but is really hard on my knees. Everything's a trade-off, I suppose. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

This is very curious to me...my daughter RARELY coughs with either hand CPT or the vest. We just started using the vest a couple of weeks ago and I was nervous that she would start coughing after using it. I was afraid that hand CPT hadn't been very effective and that the vest would prove me correct by producing a cough. Nope. No such luck. Anyone have any ideas?</end quote></div>

Have you ever tried using hypertonic saline? I know they don't do it with everyone because it can make you more wheezy. I used it for a while and I have never coughed up so much as when I was on it. I had to stop though because it was making me more wheezy and it wasn't worth it anymore. It might be something to ask your doc, that combined with vest might help a lot!

We have a bounce house and a trampoline...dang, but the weather is so hot!! Argh. It's 100+ degrees today. Haven't pursued HTS...her docs think she's too young/don't want to irritate her small airways...but, I'll bring it up again.

The HTS totally screws up my airways makes me cough, wheeze and is not effective for me at all</end quote></div>

Same here. Exercise helps me, but it can never replace the vest or hand chest pt for me.
