I am starting to get better and wanted to get back into shape like my high school hockey playing days. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with whether jogging on a treadmill or pedaling on an exercise bike is better for getting a good workout and helping the lungs out?

Hi !

I am so glad your getting better and making a goal to get back in shape, its the most wonderful thing you can do for you health!

Both are excellent exercises for lungs, and why not do both! The only different is they target different muscle groups, Jogging, is more over all work out,- it get your legs, upper body.Cycling is more on leg power, thighs, and calfs, and arms.

Both of these exercises are 'aerobic' , meaning they depend on your breathing/oxygen for fuel, so matter what you will be breathing hard only if you push!!

I would recommend jogging, it is excellent for cardiovascular system and over all fitness.

Start slow and listen to your body, you will cough alot of junk up but keep at it.!

Move on to cycling and change up your routines, as you don't want to risk boredom.

Also drink plenty or fluids, especially with some salt,.

Hope this helps !

I would think for pure aerobic exercise jogging would be best, preferably a little more each day to expand the lungs. However, I would agree with the above poster and do both.

There would be less burn-out since you are using different muscle groups and it would feel alot less repetitive.

As for myself I have been doing swimming 5-6 days a week because I feel it gets up the most junk, but I am already getting burned out and its only been a month. I may have to take my own advice and switch it up.

Maybe a bit late with my reply, but I finally decided to join!

I do both. I run when I feel well, and I cycle when I feel like my body needs a little more support - it's easier for me to moderate my workout on the bike - take the resistance down a bit or take the intensity down. It's much harder for me to do that when I'm running. I used to swim with a Masters team until the chlorine became too irritating to my lungs - swimming is a great workout because it forces you to really pay attention to your breathing.

Good luck!
